Moment of Despair by Mykola Vitaliyovych Lysenko (1842-1912) 🇺🇦 I found this piece for the Ukrainian themed concert I did on Sunday and it’s title is most tragically apt. It was written by the grandfather of modern Ukrainian classical music, Mykola Lysenko. Lysenko was a virtuoso pianist who studied at Leipzig conservatoire [You can find a large number of his piano pieces on imslp (including this one)]
I was about to paraphrase this but thought I should probably be upfront about my Wikipedia sourcing, so I have just copied it in full :
“His Ukrainophilic approach to composition was not supported by the Russian Imperial Music Society which promoted a Great Russian cultural presence in Ukraine. As a result, Lysenko severed his relationship with them, never to compose any music set to the Russian language, nor allow any translations of his works into the Russian language. The Ems Ukaz, which banned use of Ukrainian language in print, was one of the obstacles for Lysenko; he had to publish some of his scores abroad, while performances of his music had to be authorized by the imperial censor.
In order to improve his orchestration and composition skills the young Lysenko traveled to Saint Petersburg where he took orchestration lessons from Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov in the mid-1870s, but his fervent Ukrainian national position and disdain for Great Russian autocracy impeded his career. He supported the 1905 revolution and was in jail briefly in 1907. In 1908, he was the head of the Ukrainian Club, an association of Ukrainian national public figures in Kyiv.
For his opera libretti Lysenko insisted on using only the Ukrainian language. He was intent on promoting and elevating the Ukrainian culture so that he refused to allow his opera Taras Bulba to be translated and maintained that it was too ambitious to be staged in Ukrainian opera houses.Tchaikovsky was impressed by the opera and wanted to stage the work in Moscow. Lysenko's insistence on it being performed in the Ukrainian language, not Russian, prevented the performance from taking place in Moscow.”

My first Mother’s Day 🌷 Thank you to those who messaged today. It turns out today felt no worse than all the other days. I know we are not allowed to “scare” women, but what I do really really want everyone on here to know is that induction happens for a reason. I heard so much anti-induction rhetoric anecdotally that I never even knew WHY women were induced. It seems totally crazy to me now that even though I went to all the antenatal classes and all my midwife appointments, I never knew this: you are induced to reduce the risk of the placenta failing and your baby dying. All I ever heard was “It is your choice to get induced”. My baby Florence was perfect, and I have been told by two different consultants at my hospital that she would have lived if I had been booked in for an earlier induction.
So, my Mother’s Day message to you is don’t be afraid of induction, it might just save your baby’s life. And if you were induced, thankfully you will never know if that process did in fact save your baby’s life, because your baby is alive.
P.s. Please be sensitive in your comments. Whilst I appreciate people’s anger at my situation (I followed my care provider’s guidance) I don’t find it helpful. I’m just trying to help others not be scared of a system that is in place for a reason.
