Today is the Solstice—the longest night. 🌒 What better way to honour this turning of the wheel, and the women who light our lives, than by sharing this work—manifested on the hottest day of summer. Danced and conjured by choreographer Martha Adem, filmed, directed, and edited by Megan Tolme. This song is “Windbourne Sorcery I” off our 2025 release “Breathless Spirit” in collaboration with @_cares This track features Lucas playing the tanbur. It’s a three-stringed instrument popular in Iran, especially in the Kurdistan region in the western mountains. It is mostly composed in 10/8 time (count of 3-2-2-3,) which is common in Kurdish music. It was written while listening to tanbur player Ali Akbar Moradi and “Spirit of Eden” by Talk Talk. #SolsticeRitual #Disir #TurningOfTheWheel #RitualMusic #DarkFolk

"Hello, my name is Martha, and I live here in Ottawa. So I identify as a multidisciplinary artist. I do music, and I do some dance, as well as a few other things. And I moved here a few years ago, and I've been really lucky to find a lot of community, especially here in the Centretown area, and to really be embraced by a lot of wonderful artists who are working and making really cool stuff here in the city. One of my main motivations for making art is really about community. So even though I do have a day job, and I'm trying to balance everything with art as well, really being able to connect with people who motivate me is what keeps me going. And I feel super, super lucky to be connected across so many different communities here in Ottawa and also across Canada. We have so many great people here. We have the folks at Arts Court. We have Debaser. We also have Voices Dance Company, who I worked with for a while. And I really encourage everyone to just explore the city and to find wonderful artists to connect with and to work with and check out their work. I have a few projects of my own that are ongoing. From the end of May 🌸 . So much has changed since then (in very good ways), and while I've taken a bit of a step back from dance this summer, I've been enjoying watching others perform their art, as well as continuing my sword practice. Summer is never a hugely creative time for me anyway - the ideas lying dormant within are waiting for the cold snap of fall to emerge 🍂 . David Darling's work is just...stunning. I highly recommend checking out the complete Darkwood cello suite and also watching the movie "Heat," which features several of his pieces, as well as a stellar cast that includes Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Val Kilmer 🎬 . A pre-travel pondering: . 77 years of Nakba today. And the celebration of the oncoming marriage of a friend. The death of a creative soul who touched many of us this week. And the deepening of friendships that have been fulfilling in a way I’d always hoped for. The steady decline of my homeland this month. Also weight training and noticing improvement in strength and agility. One year of being on my own. And one year of recognizing my own resilience and capacity in the face of adversity. . It’s hard times out there, but for every darkness there is some sliver of light, and I try to inch my way nearer to it every day. Lucky are we to have those who love us and believe in us. Lucky am I to know you all in these times and be able to share these dances that express all the words both light and heavy in my heart that I cannot speak. . Some noodling from the weekend, courtesy of @useknifeofficial and @radwanghazimoumneh ❤️ . I've been dancing out phrases and bits of movement to this piece as inspiration strikes ever since I first heard it, but this is the first time something fully cohesive has formed. I didn't have a proper set up to film, so it was all done with screen recording, hence the face tracking and such. . Noticing strength, grace, and more control in the upper body lately, especially in the arms. We're on year 3 of belly dance, and it's nice to see some improvement, especially in this area. Grateful for these long limbs I am learning to use. Grateful for the discipline that swords have brought me. Grateful for the inspiration flamenco has ignited in me - it's all connected 🗡❤️‍🔥♾️ . I hope that one day I'll be able to perform my weirdo fusion of dance that I do - I will never be the "best" or most technically proficient mover, but I hope that some way in which I move can maybe also "move" another being. We'll have to see what the future may hold 🐍
