Reflecting On Where It's Been ❤️🔥🌱 send me more of where it's been, where they've been for you - up on walls, down on the floor, on your shirt, in your mind, on your table, out came this, that, and all- I'm so grateful I get to learn with others, from others, myself, and through this art of education and collective care.
Their censorship is selective.
And they never see it until some part is erased. Still, they don't see it, fathom it, comprehend it, live it, now.
My heart is in so much pain. And I know why.
I told them it would get vandalized.
I told them.
I told them they've told me to my face that "Palestinians need to die."
I told them.
I raised money for mutual aid through this mural. Honored organizers through this mural. Painted my deep love and appreciation for community, for Isang Bagsak, for Ethnic Studies, for my art as voice, in this mural. You truly cannot divide community.
(I wrote this in ambiguity for those who illegitimate global joint struggle. For those who silence themselves before anyone can silence them. For those who choose neutrality. As if binaries are real. This mural is a constant reminder that when they target Palestinians they target every BIPOC entity and those in intersectionality who fight for human rights we all take for granted. You cannot divide us.)
I will continue to hold my keffiyeh. I will continue to remember those paint strokes of memory I molded my paint brush to: olive leaves, fish nets, trade routes.
While lining each paint drip with sampaguita, sun birds, humming birds- those powerful, beautiful voices.
Now, the area covering the keffiyeh, resembles a pseudo-United States of America, gray. We need a reset GLB.
Thank you to everyone for reaching out to me. I hope you know I thought of you in mind when making that mural, and think of you even more as I continue.
I'm working on a website where I'm donating 50% of the proceeds from each of my products to mutual aid, for a Free Palestine. Free Congo. Free Sudan. Free Tigray. Free Hawaii. Free. This is truly the only way I see sustaining my art process further in my life. I wish only for those what they wish for the people of Palestine, the people of Congo, Sudan. Stay tuned for the website, this inaccessibility shit keeps kicking my ass.
Creating feels like unfurling the string on a kite. You can either run with it to make it fly. Or truly just stand and watch it fly on its own, for hours on end. Wait till it falls on its own with the changing wind.

listen to "Be My Summer" by Snoh Aalegra while you stare.
The beauty of nature is to see protection in another being. Through Kapwa, it's as if that breath of fresh air is in the person next to you, in front of you, the people around you. Kahit sandali- in each face, in each figure, we're touching grass as we grow together. We build worlds within one another in each conversation, terraforming planets unspoken.

One of the greatest honors I've ever experienced, is to be looked for. I truly don't think I KNEW how much that meant until I started this journey becoming a teacher. Wearing my keffiyeh in class with my Filipino flag hat on, sharing my truths, holding our name narratives with one another and reclaiming this life and themselves in their words 🫂🌱🫶
I'm making it and it's hard, I'm making it and my back is sweating, I'm making it and I am uncomfortable but learning so so much faster. So grateful I get to chip my tooth and dance in a chair and Weeee 🪽
Been redefining "home" 🪹
Ang hindi lumilingon sa pinanggalingan
Hindi makararating sa paroroonan/panuntunan
A person who does not remember where they came from (or who brought them up)
Will never reach their destination.
"When you're born here (the U.S) you don't have anything that's back in the Phillippines- in some ways you have a gap generation with me and your mom, [with this proverb] its nice to open up your mind and be wise [through the Tagalog lesson]" -Mommy Issa
I found this proverb on my own, and asked my grandma about it. It activated memories for her. She said it was taught to her in a way to honor her family members that brought her up when she was younger. And to be mindful of how she carried herself for the younger kids in her generation who look up to her.
Now I use this proverb to think of how important support systems are for not just youth but adults. Anyone who is successful, has someone and/or people that helped bring them up, to get to where they are now. Whether it was dysfunctional or not, it is in that fact of life that cultural wealth in community sustains a person, to sustain their people. Everywhere I go I know I'm representing mine, I hold my cousins, my siblings, my family and families I've become a part of, chosen and extended, my friends, my mentors- I hold all of them with me. Even those I've only spoken little with but with so much depth to hold the breath of both of our stories and lives. In that care, I hope to share this in my pedagogy.
Kasi the youth will follow you.

Thank you Abayomi @yomiinritual for teaching about Haiti, the Haitian Revolution, and taking the time to teach me about the Massacre River between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, (READ "Krik? Krak! by Edwidge Danticat) one of rushing water stained red with fleeing, wishes of refuge, death, and AntiBlackness. Thank you for modeling teaching in a way that honestly helped me heal from a lot of schooling trauma that I've experienced in past art classes. And thank you for your intentionality in using resources like paper bags as canvases and showing us your masterpeices as well. Thank you for @crewcollectivesac for hosting this space and this artist, and for the work yall do in Sac and in the region! Love them dearly and cant wait for more! Go follow and support them yall 🫶
As always I'm grateful you exist, and lets keep growing together 🌱❤️🔥
Freedom to me looks like education. It looks like listening to others is the standard, their language, their voice, their own intonations, where including others is a requirement for life, and understood as a requirement for learning, it is having a room in my mind and in my spaces for whatever, whoever, and a brilliance of knowledge that comes in each individual. It is to me the space to both build off from my lived experiences and hold other's lived experiences in my soul. It is about love, reclaiming, and naming my voice as my own. But without my mapped out illustrated visuals, and space for more, space for others, this idea of freedom will never be complete. My own freedom will never be achieved without other's freedom achieved.
Thank you @right2existfest for creating a space for turning despair into vow. Vending with @easyintheory on Ohlone land, teaching about Falasteen, the Phillippines, Payahuunadü, Dinétah, xučyun Huichin (Hooch-yoon), and humanizing. Composting the empire.
