As #JolinaMagdangal’s popularity grew in the ‘90s, the demand for the look she had created took on a life of its own. Her playful mix of butterfly clips, colorful beaded chokers, quirky hairstyles, and unabashedly feminine silhouettes quickly reproduced in Divisoria stalls, neighborhood tiangges, and school corridors across the country. For Jolina, however, the impulse was never to set trends. Dressing up was simply an instinctive form of self-expression: “Mas colorful, mas gusto ko… ’yun ’yung happiness ko, ’yun ’yung therapy ko,” she explains. In this #PreviewOriginal production, we revisit how the OG kikay and Filipino pop culture icon reclaimed girlhood and encouraged an entire generation to dress with joy, unapologetically.
