Lary 7 | Nothing Planned Jan 15-Feb 28, 2026 Opening Reception: Jan 15, 7-9pm Nothing Planned deals in after-images. Be it from the hallucinatory flicker of oscillating film projectors or the apparitions peering back from his found subjects; Lary 7’s audio/visual assemblages imprint on the mind’s eye a picture of what’s “not junk yet”. Built from the workhorses of an image-making industry now gone bloodless, these teetering assemblages whir, tick, slice and warp their own mechanical and optical logic, held together mostly by invention — as ready to sing as to sputter a last gasp. Like any fluctuating current, this show invites change and the ever-present potentialities of “failure”, a long-time concern of 7’s work. Visitors will join an ongoing “social club” in the gallery: an active-set / laboratory which persists into the night. Lary will be present throughout, cameras rolling, developing and re-inserting these twilight activities back into the machines which churn along in the dark. Nothing Planned is anything but…though where it will go is certainly unfixed. Lary 7 is a multimedia artist, performer and engineer working with forgotten electronic instruments and discarded technologies to create moving images, photographs, absurdist performances and sonic works. Born in in 1956 in Buffalo, New York, his mentors were luminaries of the electronic and film avant-garde such as Tony Conrad, Woody Vasulka, Hollis Frampton and Paul Sharits. 7’s education was equally practical however, and his work since had been informed by a technical mastery of photography and electrical engineering. Operating from his East Village apartment turned analog recording studio of over 40 years (Plastikville), he is a long-time denizen of New York’s experimental film and music underground, collaborating locally and abroad with artists such as Tom Verlaine, Swans, Jarboe, Gen Ken Montgomery, Felix Kubin, Jimi Tenor, Pan Sonic, Michael Evans, Direct Art Productions Ltd. with Fabio Roberti, Henry Jones, Alexander Haacke and Danielle de Picciotto, Bernard Gál, Jutta Koether, Dorit Chrysler and many more. #lary7 @variousartistsnyc

Sat. April 26, 2:30pm : Presented by @colloquium_unpopular_culture Sudden Sway was described by Mike Alway as "a genre in themselves". Fomed in Petersborough in 1980, they were a conceptual art-pop collective like no other. Cryptic, witty, hooky, prescient. "The Traffic Tax Scheme" 7-inch single came with a Spectrum ZX computer program. Their double-LP "Spacemate" was issued in cereal-box format and contained psychological tests, a Tarot-style predictive system, a map of the cosmos - all of which would help users learn how to 'Spacemate'. Their work spanned media - an exhibition "Home is Heavenly Springs" at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts, performing as a sort-of human jukebox on the BBC's Whistle Test, a live stage musical soap-opera '76 Kids Forever', and two John Peel sessions which eschewed a standard set list approach and instead took the form of mind-bending radio plays. Strangest of all was "Klub Londinium", proto-psychogeography, anticipating immersive theatre, in which participants went to secret locations where a doorman helped them complete a questionnaire which placed them within one of four personality types - Materialist, Mystic, Hedonist or Outsider. Then they went on a tape-guided walk involving no specific location in time or space - one which allowed participants to travel in and beyond themselves while experiencing a London simultaneously located in the past, present and future.... Artist and @variousartistsnyc co-director Scott Kiernan @zenithfoundation will be joined - via video from London - by Sudden Sway's Michael McGuire in a detailed exploration of Klub Londinium - its audio, scores, scripts and inventive recording techniques. WHERE: Immersion Room, 7th Floor, NYU Bobst Library, 70 Washington Square South Free, open to the public, non-NYU guests must RSVP to - [email protected] #suddensway #klublondinium @variousartistsnyc #scottkiernan
