The spindles don't just protect from falling, they form the pattern.
This matte black powdercoated mild steel balustrade for a home in Islington, London uses slender steel spindles arranged in a continuous zig-zag, creating a geometric rhythm that runs the length of the stair. Restrained in colour, deliberate in detail - the pattern earns attention without competing with the architecture around it.
Not an add-on. Part of the building.

Clean lines and precise alignment don't happen by accident.
This geometric steel rain shelter, fabricated and installed for Merrett Houmøller Architects in Crouch End, London - relies on structural coordination, load paths, drainage, fixing strategy and how it connects back to the building. Get any of those wrong and it shows: deflection, water pooling, visible fixings, awkward junctions.
Get it right and it feels effortless. Fully integrated with the architecture it serves.
That level of control comes from early design input, careful fabrication and considered installation.
Not added on. Properly resolved.

Great metalwork starts long before fabrication.
We collaborate with architects, designers and contractors from early design through to installation; refining junctions, resolving buildability and ensuring every detail holds on site.
Ideas refined. Junctions resolved. Execution exact.

Not everything we make is a staircase.
Pavilions, gates, balconies, bird hides, market stalls, each approached with the same design-led thinking and fabrication discipline we bring to our staircases and balustrades. Bespoke architectural metalwork, resolved with clarity and built to last.
Different from our staircases. The same thinking.

Laser-cut steel, pared to its essentials.
This mild steel staircase and balustrade for a home in Highgate, London begins with the stringer, a clean stepped profile formed from laser-cut steel that reduces the structure to exactly what it needs to be, nothing more. Slender spindles carry the same proportional logic, minimising visual weight while maintaining rhythm. The balustrade extends to the lower level, so the language holds as you move through the house.
Developed in close collaboration with Lineworks Architects, engineered by ODACE, installed alongside Portico Design & Build, and photographed by James Retief.

Spiral staircases are one of the most geometry-dependent things we make.
Every tread, radius and connection must align perfectly. A mm or two out and the stair doesn't land where it should. Get it right and a spiral stair reduces footprint without reducing presence.
This carousel shows a selection of spiral staircases of projects across London and the South East.

No two ZedWorks staircases are the same, because no two spaces are.
Every element is resolved around the architecture and interior style: open or closed risers, folded steel, perforated profiles or terrazzo and timber-clad treads. Balustrades in slender spindles, flat fins, perforated panels or tension wire. Finishes from raw blackened steel, powdercoated, bronze/brass or colour-matched metalwork.
Different components, one coherent piece.

We're hiring — and we'd love your help spreading the word.
We're looking for a Technical Design Assistant to join the ZEDWorks team full-time at our workshop in Hailsham, East Sussex.
The role sits at the heart of what we do — supporting technical design, survey, and 3D modelling alongside Amir, as well as helping to develop accurate cost estimates and material schedules on new commissions.
You'll work on structurally complex, high-specification staircases and architectural metalwork, on projects where the engineering and the aesthetic are genuinely inseparable.
We're looking for someone confident in Rhino, methodical, and genuinely interested in how things are made and how they go together. A background in architecture, architectural technology, industrial design, or product design would all be a strong fit.
40 hrs per week. Monday to Thursday 8–5, Friday 7–1 — a long weekend, every weekend.
£30,000–£34,000 depending on experience.
Full job description in our bio. Or drop us a message — we're always happy to have an informal conversation first.

Architectural metalwork fabricated for a residential project in Muswell Hill.
Designed to integrate cleanly with the surrounding architecture, the steel elements bring clarity, rhythm and definition without adding visual weight.
Every junction, proportion and fixing was carefully considered so the metalwork feels like a natural extension of the building.
Quietly expressive. Precisely executed.

This minimal staircase and balustrade was fabricated for a home in North London, developed in close collaboration with Merrett Houmøller Architects.
The design combines a tension-wire infill with a laser-cut steel frame and bespoke CNC-turned fixings, creating a lightweight visual language that keeps the stair open while remaining structurally efficient.
A continuous timber handrail softens the steelwork, introducing warmth and a tactile edge as you move through the space.
