Praise God- Our youth room now has a new, beautiful mural in it! 😍This was done by the awesome, God-loving, spray paint artist named Damin Lujan @zaoone ! 🌊When I worked with him, I wanted to incorporate our Japanese-American roots, a nod to God’s faithfulness over the last 100+ years, an ode to our church history (remember when yellow and blue used to be AJFMC & AMFC’s jersey colors?!), as well as our core values as a youth group. 🌊A lot of the time in the Bible, water is a representation of renewal, restoration, and the Holy Spirit. Ie- when Jesus walked on water, baptism, the women at the well, etc. I really feel that Damin did an incredible job incorporating this, and it’s a beautiful backdrop to the youth’s newly built stage! 🌊May our youth always feel: Safe, Seen, Heard, Known, & Loved, through every valley and mountain top moment in the name of Jesus. &May His waves of mercy and waves of grace cover us until forevermore! A new layer of Mesa Vista is now complete.   The mural Golden Tide by artist Damin Lujan(@zaoone ) now spans the façade of this former motel reimagined into 88 units of permanent affordable housing for our partners at Community Development Partners (CDP). Through rhythm, repetition, and movement, the mural weaves together a visual expression of Costa Mesa’s identity. #mural #art #affordablehousing #adaptivereuse #architecture

This 1960 el Camino and my VW bug my dad has had since the 70’s. In 1993 my dad gave me the VW Bug. We took it down to the pan and rebuilt it from the pan up. Finished it in 1997 and that was my first car. He then gave me the 60 ElCo in 2006 and that has gone through lots of changes since and still isn’t done. My blue 1971 triumph my dad and I built in 2011 and finished it in 2015. These cars and bikes are over 15 years of me and my dad in the garage together and that part is priceless. So grateful for my dad teaching me everything I know. Now he’s working on my daughters bug and other daughters Volvo. My Bug hasn’t been started since 2020. Last video is last night him and a friend just rebuilt the VW motor and we will be working on that thing again. Stoked.

DOCUMENTING MURALIST DAMIN LUJAN We love documenting the process of creating art. Recently, we had the opportunity to photograph artist/muralist Damin Lujan, also known as zaoone, painting a dynamic mural for the Anaheim Convention Center. We met him at MOONEYES events, most recently at their Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show. Instead of a traditional projector to sketch his artwork on the site, he uses the latest technology—a VR headset that maps his artwork onto the wall. It was a surreal experience trying on the headset and seeing the concept artwork in place. From there, Damin uses his preferred medium of spray paint. Growing up in Venice and Santa Monica, California, he’s influenced by graffiti, skateboarding, and the vibrant local scene. He also finds inspiration in mid-century and Japanese design. Master photographer Elliott Erwitt famously said, “Color is descriptive. Black and white is interpretive.” While we shot both in color and black and white, we like how B&W interprets Damin’s otherwise colorful work. Bold graphic design. Fluid painting style. From the Woodward archives. Mural artist Damin Lujan, also known as Zaoone, has built his reputation on being loyal to the craft. At Camp Woodward’s 2024 Art in Action week, he reminded the next generation to dream big and believe in themselves.

CDP and Mercy House did it again. Casa de Carmen in downtown Oxnard is bringing homeless services and provides much needed permanent supportive housing to the community. I love that I get to honor a local hero with my mural design. The name of the supportive housing section, “Casa de Carmen,” honors Carmen Ramírez, former chair of the County of Ventura Board of Supervisors and longtime Oxnard City Council member, who died in August 2022. Ramírez was beloved for her devoted service to Oxnard, especially its most vulnerable members. She continuously fought for the underserved prior to her untimely death at age 73. The flower in this design is known as ‘Carmen’ flower , or Amaryllis ‘Carmen’ this flower with a mix of with some mid century design for the background was perfect. I’m stoked the CDP team loved the design as much as I did. As I was designing this I was nervous, previously seeing the building mock up and knowing it was over 70’feet tall and 50’ wide wrapping around three sides of the of the building. Anything above 50’ gets a little scary, above 60’ more scary, above 70’😱. Maxed out the 85’ lift getting to all the angles of this building. Finished this three sided mural in 4 days thanks to @meta goggles, @stencilvr and @bsbelle helping out the first two days driving the lift as I sketched it out. Thank you CDP, thank you @mercyhouselc and thank you @sprayplanet @montana_colors @mtnshop_losangeles for the best spray paint out there.

Our time in São Paulo was so good. We love this country so much and blessed to come alongside leaders like @luizboblee who are making disciples through skateboarding. We couldn’t visit Brazil and not get @holyburgersp and the fact that just a block away is this skate plaza is like icing on the cake. It was a quick hit and run at the park as our time in SP was so short. So much to do. So little time. Not many people know this, but Brazil has 8,000,000+ skateboarders and over 1,000 public skateparks! The harvest is so plentiful out here! Praying for guys like @lucafreestylesk8 and @luizboblee who we pray will continue impacting this nation with the Good News of Jesus. Stoked to be flying to Florianopolis tomorrow to visit our friends at @surfhouse_floripa ! Will you join us in praying for direction and clarity as we continue to pave the way for Lord willing a @ridenaturesouthamerica HQ and ministry base here in Brazil!

Such a blessing getting to be a part of @thesendbrasil in Belo Horizonte! Excited to get back to the HQ with a greater passion and fire to see a new wave of missionaries sent out to the ends of the earth. We are believing that action sports might be one of the greatest tools to strategically go after some of the hardest to reach places in the world. Would you join us in praying for the resources and wisdom to equip and empower young leaders to carry the message of the cross to the ends! Until every ear hears…

A big shout out to our friends at @institutosonhe ! What an honor to be reminded once again of how amazing this ministry is! They are feeding over 600 children a day while investing into the next generation in ways we may never know or see the impact! We are beyond grateful to have played a small role in their skate program and pray the Lord would allow us to continue supporting their efforts to reach the least of these in one of the poorest communities in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Sometimes ministry looks like sharing from a mic or stage but most times for us it looks like simply showing up. We rolled up to the park and were greeted right away by a squad of the local skaters. We exchanged some fist bumps and it didn’t take long for a kid who goes by “Gasoline” to ask us if we had an extra deck. Earlier that day his board had shot out into the street and was ran over by a truck. We had brought with us a few decks to give away and we knew right away he was going to get one. The simple gift a skateboard is all it took to gather a group of locals to present the Gospel. We don’t always get to see the full story but we pray the seeds planted through the Good News and the gift of a board take root and begin to change this local park. Leaders are being mobilized in this community and we’re working to support the start of a local Bible study at this park alongside a church that we had the chance to spend time with the pastor who has a heart to reach the lost.
