Great movements don’t announce themselves they’re recognized in hindsight.
Being invited to speak at Harvard University’s Center for African Studies on Amapiano as a cultural export of freedom is that recognition moment. Not just for me for an entire generation of South African creators who built something extraordinary from nothing, in townships the world wasn’t watching.
The academy has now confirmed what we always knew, this was never just music. It was diplomacy. It was identity. It was freedom, exported.
And this is precisely why we must study. Not to be validated by institutions but to be present in them. When our music becomes policy, when our culture enters scholarship, when Amapiano sits in academic discourse at Harvard we need to be the ones in that room shaping the narrative. Not leaving it to others to define us.
To every young creator watching: go to school. Build your craft and your credentials. So that when the world catches up to what you’ve built and it will you are already seated at the table.
The music was always the message. Now make sure you are in the room when it’s being read. 🇿🇦.
Thank you to @harvard Centre for Africa Studies, @brandsouthafrica and organisers of the event.

Took some time in Brazil with @corona studying how they’ve built a lifestyle brand that genuinely belongs to the culture, not just the shelf.
Bringing those insights home. South Africa has the beaches, the energy, and the people. The opportunity is right here.
Research doesn’t always look like a boardroom. 👀🇿🇦
