YSI - ’Light’, the music video and double single ’Birth-Death / Light’ is out today on INFRA and Babyface Muisc & Publishing.
YSI is the solo project of Finnish composer, multi-instrumentalist, sound designer, and second INFRA co-founder Tuomas Soppela. He frequently collaborates with musician and architect Pekka Airaxin, who contributes guitars, vocals, and co-writing. Light, the Helsinki-based artist’s maxi single-inspired EP exploring the cataclysmic cycles of life and death, light and darkness, and the conscious and unconscious mind, is out Friday, November 28 on INFRA and Babyface Music & Publishing.
On Light, set to release with the music video premiere for the EP’s lead single on November 28, YSI sounds the feelings that comes with cycles’ beginnings and ends. The eponymous track ruptures the membrane separating night from day. Under the right hands, light can be just as heavy as darkness, just as a pulsing bass à la The Cure’s “A Forest” can wrest gravitational onus from a guitar. In “Light,” YSI accordingly moves us through this reversal, then reflects on the consequences. Steam releases, percussion intensifies, and the artist exhales, “Light, easy with it / Soon, fucked it all up / Gone, it’s only gone.” At the song’s end, the artist does not reach Enlightenment but instead stumbles upon the reasons for keeping certain parts of your or your loved ones’ psyches out of the light
