Almost a year ago, I somehow stumbled upon the audacity to ask Michael McDonald if he’d lay down some vocals for me on a song. I sent him Mr. Revival. Fast forward a few months later and I am in the studio with my all-time hero working out bgvs in person. Mr Revival duet version with thee Michael McDonald comes out this Friday 12/12. What the fuck.
I’ve gotten to know Mike and his daughter Scarlett over the past few years and in this one particular case, absolutely meet your idols. I know he is going to feel bashful about the praise because that’s who he is, but hearing Michael McDonald sing in the same sound-dampened room as me sent lightening bolts through me that took me a few days to recover from. I’ll readily admit I’ve never gotten to work in the same room as a legend before and it cracked me open and made me understand greatness on a whole different level. It’s easy to forget when you’re casually eating burritos and drinking diet cokes with him, getting to hear his incredible stories that’s he is so generous with. But then you put a mic in front of him and he starts to take off and your hands don’t stop shaking for a few days like you touched a light socket. And one of the most generous, kind, and grounded people I have ever met in my 37 years. This is not fluff, this is true. Thank you endlessly, @michaelmcdonaldofficial and @scarlettmcdonald for making it happen. You truly are one in a billion.
