Pasang (@pasang_lhamu_sherpa_akita ) grew up in the Everest region of Nepal, in a culture that reserved mountaineering for men. At 15 she decided that wasn’t her story, traveled to France to become Nepal’s first female mountaineering instructor, summited Everest, and in 2014 was part of the first team of Nepali women to summit K2. Cira (@ciracrowell ) grew up in the American South, where photography wasn’t considered an appropriate path for a girl. Her father eventually handed her a dusty camera from a shelf, a Leicaflex SL2, and that small act became the first step toward a life that led her to become an award-winning filmmaker and the first American-born woman to climb Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest peak.
The two met on Mount Rainier, where Pasang was guiding, and discovered they had both quietly stopped talking about their dreams to avoid the questions that followed. Together they built a friendship where the silence finally lifted. They went on to do medical treks in Nepal and, after the 2015 earthquake, mobilized relief efforts for villages around Gorkha. Pasang was named one of National Geographic’s 2016 Adventurers of the Year and Cira was selected as one of only 55 photographers selected to represent 100 Years of @leica_camera in the USA. ✨ What would you have missed if you’d listened to the people who told you no? #your21summers

Rosie Kamden (@rosie.kamdem ) has spent her career hiking into villages that don’t appear on any map, sitting with women and girls who had never been asked what they wanted from their lives, and working to change that answer for as many of them as possible. As a mother of five and Deputy Director of Programs at the International Rescue Committee in Niger, she has survived three coups d’état and kept going every time, because her belief never wavered: that every woman and girl deserves education, economic independence, and the freedom to imagine a future on her own terms.

McKenzie (@msp.fineart ) paints in the margins of her day. Before her kids wake up, during nap time, after they fall asleep. Thirty minutes here, forty-five minutes there, and somehow out of those small windows, entire mountain landscapes emerge.
She’s an oil painter inspired by John Singer Sargent, placing skiers against vast western peaks in winter and painting plein air landscapes come spring. Her work sells as fast as she makes it. She’s also the mother of two young children while her husband Tate finishes his PhD, which means the load, for now, falls mostly on her.
But McKenzie isn’t waiting for life to slow down before she starts living it. She found the thirty minute blocks, she added them up, and that’s really the whole lesson. A few minutes a day becomes days, then seasons, then a life built around what you love most. That’s what a Twenty One Summer looks like in practice ✨☀️💙 #your21summers
Reinvention rarely announces itself. Sometimes it looks like packing up, crossing an ocean, and deciding to trust your own eye over everyone else’s opinion.
