Het Caribisch gebied wordt vaak verkocht als paradijs. Maar achter het beeld van zon, zee en resorts groeit op veel eilanden de druk op wonen, publieke ruimte en gemeenschap. Wie profiteert van toerisme? En wie raakt langzaam ruimte kwijt?
Tijdens Echa Kuenta: A Small Place staan vragen centraal over koloniale erfenissen, gentrificatie en de strijd om toegang tot land, zee en geheugen. Met inspiratie uit A Small Place van Jamaica Kincaid onderzoeken we hoe verhalen, muziek en orale tradities geschiedenissen bewaren die vaak buiten officiële archieven vallen.

Welke verhalen dragen we bij ons en welke geven we door?
In de tweede editie van Echa Kuenta duiken we in de rijke orale verteltraditie van de Cariben: een levend geheel van mythes, poëzie, muziek en herinneringen, gevormd door Afrikaanse, inheemse en Europese invloeden.
Geïnspireerd door A Small Place van Jamaica Kincaid onderzoeken we hoe koloniale geschiedenis en macht doorwerken in de verhalen die verteld worden, en welke niet.
Met een inleiding door Danick Trouwloon, vertellingen van Kjelld Masoud Kroon, Giraluna Gil en Jörgen Gario, een Tambú-optreden van Mara Leti en moderatie door Milouska Meulens. Sluit de avond feestelijk met ons af tijdens de afterparty met @rozaly.music .

We had the privilege of collaborating with @yo_danick for a zine workshop where a cosy group of us exercised our creativity to reimagine the world. Like Mariame Kaba says, Hope is a discipline. And the darker the world gets, the more we need to fight the urge to stay status quo. And if we cant dream a better world, we cant build it.
We dream of a world with no weapons.
We dream of a world that is safe for all children.
We dream of a world where everyone has access to their basic needs and more.

Hoe ga je om met beelden van klimaatrampen ver van je bed? 🌍 Tijdens deze editie van Club Cinema vertonen we de documentaire BEELDEN UIT TUVALU van Dylan Werkman (@workmannnnnn ). Daarna gaan we in gesprek met klimaatwetenschapper Danick Trouwloon en hiphopartiest Juny Martina over het thema van de film. De avond wordt gemodereerd door @yinskesilva
🎥 Naast het nagesprek treden @juny.martina en @yo_danick ook samen op. Juny brengt een live-performance van een van zijn nummers, terwijl Danick een fragment voordraagt uit het @6islands.zine — een project dat zij samen met anderen uit de Caribische gemeenschap initieerde om de positie van de eilanden binnen het Koninkrijk zichtbaarder te maken. What a genuine joy and labour of love it has been to co-create the academic zine-making retreat together ✨
Seeing you all engage so genuinely with the retreat, even when the conversations were difficult and the questions uncomfortable, has warmed our hearts and fueled our minds. We will carry the feelings, thoughts, memories of these three days a long time 🌬️🍃🐚
You have truly shown how crucial transformative spaces are for holding space for our full selves to show up. We’ll still be pondering this as a research question, but we are increasingly convinced that zine-making is a magical way to capture our collective and individual hopes and frustrations in co-constructive and reflexive ways.

After a 3-day retreat, early-career researchers turned their reflections into a collective zine — and now they’ll bring those ideas to life through performance at our launch event. Expect an evening of dynamic storytelling, dialogue, and immersive experiences.

Join us on Sunday, August 31st for a Community Reflection Event on the Societal Impact of Sustainability Research in the Caribbean 🔬🦩📚🌴
As part of our Academic Zine-Making Retreat, you’re invited to an intimate gathering at Mondi Lodge, Curaçao. Together we’ll reflect on current research impact practices in the Caribbean: what’s working, where improvements are needed, and what role art plays in ensuring more meaningful impact.
Researcher and practitioner Richenel Ansano will share insights from decades of work in memory, heritage, and healing, in conversation with artists Ralph Winedt and Sharelly Emanuelson. They will help us situate our reflections within the longer history—and future—of Caribbean research.
