Janel from LA Y Camping Services shares her Y story, and how camp helped her discover her passion for adventure.
"One day when my mom was signing both my sister and I out so that we could head home, a staff member approached us to chat about the camping services side of the YMCA, where they offer sleep away camp for a week to the [centers] in the city. The staff member went on to talk about the activities they provide there, like horseback riding, rock climbing, hiking, banana boating on Big Bear Lake, sleeping in bunk beds, rooming with friends, and gathering around the fire every night, etc. It was then that my mind was flooded with pictures of the greenest trees, the clearest skies, and starry nights. My sister and I knew we had to go. Thankfully, my mom was brave enough to take that leap through the first of many doors the Y opened up for both my sister and I.”
“The love I have for camp is rooted in eight-year-old Janel who wanted to be as impactful/“cool” as the counselors she had, and as adventurous as the perm staff who led the activities on our little oasis of a mountain. The passion I have to create access to all things beautiful this life has to offer stems from teenage/young adult Janel, whose directors saw great things in her before she did herself. The imagination camp nurtured for me as a child has evolved into inspiration as an adult to commit my life to providing a service to leave places and people better than when we found and met them anywhere and everywhere I go.”
Thank you, Janel. We’re honored to be part of your journey and have you in our Y family. 🩵

Andrea from LA Y Camping Services former YMCA camper and now Assistant Program Director - shares her Y story and how camp gave her a sense of belonging.
“I didn’t expect camp to change me. The first time I went, I was a 10-year-old kid with a short attention span and a lot of attitude. I was also a first-generation immigrant, trying to figure out how to navigate a world I didn’t fully understand, without much guidance. I showed up ready for camp carrying nerves, uncertainty, and the weight of being completely on my own, I had no friends coming into it, no family, just me."
"Camp has a way of breaking down walls and building something stronger in their place. It nurtures the kind of confidence that every kid deserves to develop but not every kid has the access to do so. I’ll never forget laughing with people who felt like strangers just hours before, or opening up in conversations where vulnerability was met with care, and feeling a sense of belonging I had never experienced. And that’s the real impact of camp. It may only last a week, but what it gives you can last a lifetime."
Thank you, Andrea. We’re honored to be part of your journey and have you in our Y family. 🩵

This Mother’s Day, we honor the moms and mother figures who’ve shaped us, supported us, and stood by us.
Their strength and compassion help build the kind of world we strive for every day at the Y—one where everyone belongs, everyone matters, and no one is left behind.
To all who nurture, guide, and lead: thank you.

Our Chief Program Officer Chris Jefferson wrote an article about the impact this decade will have for youth in Los Angeles:
“There is a moment happening right now that is bigger than sport. This decade, the United States will host some of the largest global sporting events in the world, including the FIFA World Cup and the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In Los Angeles, we are living at the center of this moment through events like the Super Bowl, the NBA All-Star Game, and the road to LA28. The energy, attention, and investment that come with these events are real. The question I keep coming back to is simple: What will young people experience because of it?”
- Christopher Jefferson, Chief Program Officer, YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles

We’re proud to share an exciting milestone for the LA Y. We have now officially trademarked our new logo and tagline! This further solidifies our commitment and promise to our communities, that we are the Center for Community Well-Being for our communities in Los Angeles.
Securing this trademark allows us to expand that impact even further. It helps ensure that as this concept grows — whether within our Y or adopted by others — it is carried forward with intention, integrity, and a shared standard of quality that reflects the importance of this work.
