Yesterday was Youth Homelessness Matters Day.
Like many people right now, our team feels the weight of a difficult world with cost‑of‑living pressures, instability, and uncertainty about what comes next.
But one thing is clear to us: young people don’t choose homelessness.
Every day, we choose to stand up for them.
We’ve chosen work that’s unlikely to make us wealthy, but allows us to be part of change, because we believe, deeply, that every young person deserves a safe home, dignity and support.
When we say youth homelessness matters, we mean it. Not just because it’s our job, but because we know it’s not young people’s fault, and they deserve so much better.

Youth homelessness is the reality nobody’s watching.
Last year nearly 43,000 children and young people presented alone to specialist homelessness services. Young people experience homelessness for a variety of reasons but the majority have been exposed to domestic and family violence and have experienced family breakdown. There is an affordable housing crisis in Australia – 0% of private rentals are affordable to anyone on a youth allowance.

Start the morning with a FREE coffee and casual conversation to raise awareness and promote discussion on ending child and youth homelessness. Join the The Salvation Army and Youth Services South Australian this Youth Homelessness Matters Day.
Youth homelessness services can’t keep up with the demand for beds. Housing is only a part of the solution. Funding to provide the wrap around services necessary to support young people and to help them thrive must increase in line with inflation and the spirally costs of service provision.
