New EP “Foxtrap” out today. I’ve been sitting on years of beats, and I’ll be releasing them as projects intermittently throughout this year. This one is heavily inspired by Southern hip-hop. Check it out anywhere you listen to music.

For this year’s RPM Challenge, I recorded around 21 songs. A few of them have since evolved into something else, so I’ve held off on releasing those for now. I ended up recording a large batch of instrumental tracks, both electric and acoustic, and decided to split them into two separate releases.
“Conception Bay” is a collection of traditional and bluegrass inspired instrumentals. I tried to keep everything fully acoustic, but ended up adding a bit of air organ and the ol’ bass to fill out the low end on a few tracks. This one was a lot of fun to work on. A couple of the songs are pretty heavy handed with their inspiration from some specific traditional tunes (I’ll let you figure out which ones). In a non-RPM move, I also recorded a cover of my favourite Robert Lester Folsom song.
The second release, “Various Dishes”, started with a few instrumentals inspired by the guitar playing on the most recent Cindy Lee album, but it quickly lost the theme and pivoted into some straight up electric blues instrumentals (lol). I also included a few demos from an upcoming Blockbuster release.

Out today “CONTRABAND,” a new EP from myself, @_gsm00th , and @samsquanchuel . Last December, Sam and I spent a night recording. We got sidetracked and started making some beats on my 4-track cassette recorder. I have a cassette of drum breaks that we’d bounce down to a loop pedal, then I’d record Sam playing a piano loop over top. After that, I’d lay down some bass, and we’d finish it off with effects or woodwinds before bouncing it back to cassette to keep experimenting. A few weeks ago, @_gsm00th and I recorded his vocals in a single night. Just a few takes per song, trying to capture the same improvisational, free vibe that Sam and I had while creating the beats.

Two weeks ago, my band Gallery dropped our debut EP, “Rolling Stop”. It’s one of my longest-running bands, so it feels great to finally put something out. We’ve been through a few lineup changes and bounced around between sounds, but I’ve always loved making music with this crew of homies. After three years of on-and-off recording, editing, planning, touring, and re-recording, Swimming has finally released our second album. “Old” is a collection of songs that have been floating around for a while but never fully recorded. Some were played and forgotten, some have been mainstays in our set, and others have been reworked from past bands into something new.
I believe that even if you’re not entirely sold on a song at first, it’s still worth recording. With a few tweaks, it could evolve into something entirely new—or even better, become someone else’s new favorite song. There’s a certain level of letting go of your ego when it comes to recording and releasing music, and we embraced that mindset when making this record. In the end, we’ve created something that we’re all incredibly proud of. We trusted the process, and through that trust, these songs were given new life.
A huge thanks to Jacob and Nick for their commitment to the grind and for always willing to put in the work—whether it’s recording, practicing, or hitting the road. Also, a big shout-out to Nate for all his help through No Funeral.
