Next up we have Inter/Advanced Contemporary with Micha!! 🙌@miika_chocolat
6:00-7:30pm on May 12th and 19th at the Heart of Riverdale.
This class will begin with an image-based improvisation check-in with our bodies and minds, and help us shift into focus for class. We will then progress into some physical conditioning to build heat in the body and ready ourselves for class. The class will include some technical exercises in the centre to activate the stability in our legs and feet, layering on curves and swings with the upper body. We then move into more momentum-based exercises across the floor. We will focus on how using momentum and spiral can help us move in and out of the floor efficiently, with ease and articulation. The class will pull from techniques such as Counter technique and Flying Low & Passing Through.
Please bring pants or knee pads and long sleeves to protect your skin while moving on the floor.

Sadie Segriff is a freelance dancer, choreographer and digital media artist raised in the Yukon and splits their time between Whitehorse and Montréal. As a dancer, Sadie’s focus is contemporary dance and floor work, using momentum and weight to create dynamic movements. Sadie holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Performance. As a choreographer and creator, Sadie's work blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces by bringing the inside out and outside in. The natural environment is a constant thread in their artistic practice, whether by integrating projected imagery into a studio setting or by staging dance in site-specific locations. Concepts of place, water, and territory are central to their identity and have a profound impact on their work. Sadie has spent years canoe tripping, following the river's path, capturing videos of the current and taking that movement into the body. Their work evokes reflection and highlights the intricate connections we share with the natural environment around us. Sadie’s new work will be presented at the Yukon Arts Centre in August 2027.

We're excited to announce that Adele @adele.harries will be joining our team this year as our Programming and Marketing Coordinator! 🌱 She'll be helping out with the marketing side of things as well as helping Micha facilitate class, so don't be afraid to say hello if you see her around the studio this summer! 🤗
Adele grew up dancing at the Heart of Riverdale and is now going into her 4th year in the Contemporary Dance BFA program at York University in Toronto. She’s been attending YCTC’s classes for the last two summers and is so excited to be a part of their team this season!
We can't wait to start off our 2026 season with two weeks of Inter/Advanced Contemporary with Sadie!! @sadgriff 🌟
Tuesdays April 28th and May 5th at The Heart of Riverdale from 6:00-7:30pm.
Join Sadie for their Inter/Advanced Contemporary class, which begins with grounding and introspective improvisation that brings inspiration from our natural world into the studio. Through slow, intentional movement, we’ll build heat and speed. The class will move into physical floorwork, using momentum and weight, which can give way to softness and create fluid and dynamic movement.
Please wear long pants and sleeves to protect your skin during floor work.

💥 SUMMER DUMP💥
AHHHHH! We are so excited to have successfully brought another summer of dance to the Yukon. THANK YOU to all dancers who participated, and to all the incredible teachers and musicians who made this summer special. Here's a little recap of what was accomplished:
• 12 weeks of advanced/professional classes, including contemporary, jazz, house, and ballet
• 9 classes accompanied by live music
• 14 different teachers engaged, 4 musicians
• 152 total participations, meaning just over 6 dancers per class
• 41 different dancers throughout the summer
*All numbers exclude Traverse intensive*
Thinking about these accomplishments gives us goosebumps and thinking about where dance is headed in the Yukon makes us leap with excitement. We are overjoyed with the calibre of teaching and of artistry we were able to bear witness to this summer.
As the year continues, we'll keep you updated with our scheming. In the meantime, feel free to reach out if there's anything more YOU want to see up north. Let's get this bread✨

Contemporary dance is alive & well up here in the Yukon 🏔️🌞🙌🏼 @sadgriff crushing the combo across the floor at the Old Fire Hall last month during our first ever intensive weekend.
Thanks to @calderwhite for leading some amazing workshops 🫶🏼 and thank you to all the dancers who came out 🎉 we are very proud of our strong and talented community.
Thanks to @masonbramadat for capturing some of these moments in the studio together.
Back in August we hosted the most dreamy weekend of dance workshops in the Old Fire Hall with guest artists from Vancouver.
.
None of it would have been possible without the support of the Yukon Arts Centre @yukonarts through their YAC residency program, our funder the Yukon Government and our sponsor Neighbourly North @neighbourlynorth .
We'd like to take a moment to thank our studio sponsors Northern Lights School of Dance @nlsdyukon & The Heart of Riverdale @theheartofriv 💕
.
We truly could not host our classes at affordable rates without the support of the two dance schools of the Yukon as well as our funder the Yukon Government.
.
THANK YOU!
Throwback to a highlight of our 2025 season when we spent a weekend getting sweaty & inspired in the Old Fire Hall with @calderwhite & @generous_mess (@sarah_hutton & @aidencass ).
We are so grateful we got to host talented guest artists from out of town in the beautiful dance space that is the Old Fire Hall. Thank you to the Yukon Arts Center @yukonarts for their support of the project through the YAC residency program.
