WINNERS REVISIT - T3 Collingwood
Winner | Commercial Building | 25th Australian Timber Design Awards
Melbourne's tallest timber hybrid office building rises fifteen storeys above Wellington Street in Collingwood, the first Australian application of Hines' T3 (Timber, Transit, Technology) concept.
Designed by
@jcbarchitects with structural engineering by AECOM, the building pairs a five-storey brick and concrete podium with eight levels of mass timber above: Pinus radiata CLT floor panels by
@xlamanz and
Australian Oak MASSLAM hardwood glulam columns and beams by
@sustainable_hardwoods . The glulam was manufactured by ASH from Eucalyptus delegatensis and regnans including 28% bushfire-salvaged logs, with specialist timber engineering, shop drawings, coordination and pre-attachment of bracketry all delivered in-house.
A total of 738 glulam elements sit exposed in the office interiors, their direct-bearing connections designed to minimise steel and express the warmth of the hardwood. The hybrid timber structure delivers a 34% reduction in upfront carbon and stores over 360,000 kg of CO₂e. All mass timber is PEFC-certified.
Hear judge Dr Ali Hadigheh share what made this project stand out. Dr Hadigheh is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Sydney (then Senior Lecturer), where he leads research in sustainable construction materials and structural durability.
Since its ATDA win, T3 Collingwood has received the Harry Seidler Award for Commercial Architecture (2024 National Architecture Awards), dual CTBUH Best Tall Building Awards, the iF Design Award Gold, and Best of the Best at the 2024 Sustainability Awards.
