🏆 Entries for the 27th Australian Timber Design Awards are now open. timberdesignawards.com.au/how-to-enter/ PROJECT SPOTLIGHT - Potassium St Industrial Commercial Building | 25th Australian Timber Design Awards One of Queensland's first mass timber industrial warehouses. At Narangba in the Moreton Bay growth corridor, Sancus Property and Zeen Design have delivered a 3,000m² warehouse that replaces the conventional steel-and-concrete industrial shed with a CLT and GLT structural system, proving that engineered timber can provide effective outcomes in industrial settings. The primary structure is a series of GLT columns and roof trusses achieving a 36-metre clear span, fabricated from Hyne GL12 Glulam. This is a lower-grade, widely available product that demonstrates efficient use of fibre. Columns are fixed at the base while trusses are pin-connected at the knee, a detail that allowed each truss to be prefabricated on the ground and craned into place with straightforward connections done at height. CLT gable end walls and 3-metre-high shear walls between bays complete the envelope. The entire timber structure was installed and the building delivered in just six months. Inside, a 200m² mezzanine office is framed entirely in exposed CLT: warm, tactile surfaces that sit in striking contrast to the industrial scale beyond. All engineered timber was PEFC-certified and sourced from sustainably managed Australian plantations, with CLT manufactured by @xlamanz . The project sequesters an estimated 385 tonnes of CO₂. Since its ATDA shortlisting, the project received Regional and State Design Awards from Building Design Queensland. 📐 Zeen Design 🏠 @sancusproperty 🏗 @xlamanz 🪵 @hynetimber 📷 Project Studio @woodcentralau #ATDA2026 #AustralianTimberDesignAwards #TimberDesign #CLT #GLT #Glulam #MassTimber #EngineeredTimber #IndustrialArchitecture #QueenslandArchitecture #SustainableDesign #PEFC #CertifiedTimber #Biophilic #PrefabTimber #WoodDesign #HyneTimber #Narangba

🏗 Entries for the 27th Australian Timber Design Awards are now open. timberdesignawards.com.au/how-to-enter/ PROJECT SPOTLIGHT - UniSC Moreton Bay Campus Stage 2 Shortlisted | Public Building | Fitout – Commercial & Public | Sustainability 25th Australian Timber Design Awards Three new buildings for Queensland's fastest-growing university campus, designed and documented by @richardkirkarch in just six months, built in eighteen. The UniSC Moreton Bay Campus Stage 2 expansion at Petrie is one of Queensland's first university projects to use CLT as its primary structural system, with Cross Laminated Timber walls and Glulaminated Timber columns and beams forming both the structure and the finished interior surfaces. The mass engineered timber approach eliminates entire finishing trades. CLT walls and GLT beams are left exposed throughout, creating warm, biophilic learning environments without the need for additional linings. CLT floor panels double as internal soffits, removing traditional ceilings in many spaces and lending a sense of generous volume. Plywood panelling replaces plasterboard, and recycled Blackbutt hardwood strip flooring grounds the interiors. The prefabricated MET structure also becomes the facade system, sealing the buildings at speed, a critical advantage on an operational university campus where noise and disruption must be minimised. All CLT was PEFC-certified and fabricated in Australia by @xlamanz ; GLT was PEFC-certified and supplied by HASSLACHER group from Europe, with @hesstimber delivering the full timber construction scope. The result is an estimated 40% reduction in upfront carbon compared to conventional construction. Since its ATDA shortlisting, the project received a Commendation for Educational Architecture at the 2025 AIA Greater Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards. 📐 Architect: @richardkirkarch 🔨 Builder: @badge_constructions 🏗 Structural Engineer: @aurecon 🪵 CLT: @xlamanz 🪵 GLT: @hasslachernoricatimber 🪵 Timber Construction: @hesstimber 📷 @scottburrowsphotographer @woodcentralau #ATDA2026 #AustralianTimberDesignAwards #TimberDesign #CLT #GLT #MassTimber #EngineeredTimber #UniSC #MoretonBay

🏆 Entries for the 27th Australian Timber Design Awards are now open. timberdesignawards.com.au/how-to-enter/ WINNERS REVISIT - T3 Collingwood Winner | Commercial Building | 25th Australian Timber Design Awards Melbourne's tallest timber hybrid office building rises fifteen storeys above Wellington Street in Collingwood, the first Australian application of Hines' T3 (Timber, Transit, Technology) concept. Designed by @jcbarchitects with structural engineering by AECOM, the building pairs a five-storey brick and concrete podium with eight levels of mass timber above: Pinus radiata CLT floor panels by @xlamanz and Australian Oak MASSLAM hardwood glulam columns and beams by @sustainable_hardwoods . The glulam was manufactured by ASH from Eucalyptus delegatensis and regnans including 28% bushfire-salvaged logs, with specialist timber engineering, shop drawings, coordination and pre-attachment of bracketry all delivered in-house. A total of 738 glulam elements sit exposed in the office interiors, their direct-bearing connections designed to minimise steel and express the warmth of the hardwood. The hybrid timber structure delivers a 34% reduction in upfront carbon and stores over 360,000 kg of CO₂e. All mass timber is PEFC-certified. Hear judge Dr Ali Hadigheh share what made this project stand out. Dr Hadigheh is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Sydney (then Senior Lecturer), where he leads research in sustainable construction materials and structural durability. Since its ATDA win, T3 Collingwood has received the Harry Seidler Award for Commercial Architecture (2024 National Architecture Awards), dual CTBUH Best Tall Building Awards, the iF Design Award Gold, and Best of the Best at the 2024 Sustainability Awards. 📸 @blachford / Ned Meldrum Design: @jcbarchitects Structural Engineering: AECOM Developer: Hines Builder: @icon_construction_ GLT Fabrication: @sustainable_hardwoods CLT Fabrication: @xlamanz @woodcentralau #ATDA2026 #AustralianTimberDesignAwards #TimberDesign #MassTimber #CLT #Glulam #MASSLAM #AustralianOak #AustralianHardwood #SustainableDesign #GreenStar #TimberConstruction #CommercialArchitecture

As we approach International Women’s Day this weekend, the Hyne Group is once again, celebrating some of the amazing women in our business. Through profiling, we will be celebrating a different woman each day throughout this week. Day 1 is all about celebrating Dorota Szpadkiewicz, our structural modeler at XLAM 💜✨🏗️ After graduating with a structural engineering degree, this incredible woman commenced her career in Poland as a ship and boat designer. However, inspired by timber in construction and drawn to the more recent introduction of such construction methodology in Australia compared to Europe, she set her sights on being part of this growing industry. Today, she is supported by XLAM to complete her Masters in Structural Engineering at UTS before becoming a qualified structural engineer for the company. Inspired by a timber constructed city in Poland, Dorota is living out her passion, “Timber is beautiful, sustainable and innovative. I love the look and smell of timber and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a drawing become a mass timber building. “The journey from shop drawing to coordination, manufacturing and installation is incredibly rewarding.” Dorota attended a Hyne Group sponsored Gottstein course in 2023 and was further inspired by our industry of passionate timber specialists. She went on to win a Gottstein fellowship to further cover some of the costs of her study. She is now a proud member of the Gottstein alumni. Dorota is mentored through her study by both the team at XLAM and her Professor, Elizabeth Tomc who inspired Dorota to apply for a post graduate leadership role. Dorota’s message to other women is to: “Believe in yourself. Give yourself permission to learn on the job as you are not expected to know everything on day one – nobody does”.
