What an incredible opportunity it was to experience ‘Spectral’, a new live work by SCCA’s R|Artist Residency: Urban Ecologies artist-in-residence, Vijay Thillaimuthu, presented within the CAVE2 facility at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Developed during a period of focused research and collaboration, ‘Spectral’ continues Vijay’s investigation into electromagnetic phenomena, approaching electromagnetic radiation as an ecological condition that shapes our environment beyond the limits of human perception. Central to the work was the refinement of custom electromagnetic recording devices, including induction coils and wideband receivers housed in 3D-printed frames, capturing the “sonic fingerprint” of local electrical systems. Signals that first appeared as interference gradually revealed harmonic structures and distinct tonal behaviours, forming the foundation of a cohesive, real-time system. Community engagement formed an integral part of the process, with a public workshop inviting participants to build their own electromagnetic recording devices. Recordings captured during the session were later incorporated into the evolving composition, embedding the local electromagnetic environment within the final presentation. Presented as a live performance rather than a fixed installation, sound and visuals were generated entirely in real time from electromagnetic feedback and modular synthesis processes, responding to signal fluctuations in the moment. We’re grateful to the Creative Ecologies Research Cluster at UniSC for their support of the residency, and to Leah Barclay for the in-conversation following the showing. WORK IN PROGRESS SHOWING → VIJAY THILLAIMUTHU You’re warmly invited to a preview of ‘Spectral’, a new work-in-progress by Melbourne-based audio-visual and laser artist Vijay Thillaimuthu, developed during R|Artist Residency: Urban Ecologies. Presented by SCCA as part of The Refinery, in partnership with the Creative Ecologies Research Cluster (CERC) at UniSC, Spectral explores the hidden electromagnetic environments that permeate contemporary urban life. Drawing on field recordings captured from electrical and networking infrastructure, the work reveals an omnipresent yet largely imperceptible layer of the built environment: electromagnetic radiation. Using custom-built recording devices, modular synthesis and real-time visualisation systems, Vijay transforms raw electrical data into an immersive audio-visual composition. Sound and image are generated from the same underlying source, voltage, creating a multisensory experience where multiple expressions of energy unfold simultaneously. Created specifically for UniSC’s CAVE2 advanced visualisation system, audiences will experience the work within a 320-degree visual display and spatialised sound, encountering the city’s invisible infrastructures as dynamic, living systems. 🗓️ When: Thursday, 26 February 2026 ⏰ Time: 5pm for 5:30pm start 📍 Where: The CAVE2, H Block, University of the Sunshine Coast Free RSVP → link in bio . . . R|Artist Residency: Urban Ecologies is delivered by SCCA as part of The Refinery, in partnership with the Creative Ecologies Research Cluster at UniSC. Supported by Major Partners, Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, and Sunshine Coast Council through the Regional Arts Development Fund.
