Zine Your Side Project with @xavogram 🖌️
Have you heard of @side.projectbtn ? The creative community in Brighton for people who “make things on the side, wish the did, or forgot they could”? Well, get them on your radar. @roseradtke.brands and @onaplategrowth have curated a wonderful network of creatives and put on regular events in Brighton.
This particular event was a zine making workshop with @xavogram at @brightonhausonthehill . I was anxious, as I’m very much a words-creative rather than a visual one, but they had emphasised all you needed to bring was yourself and some half-formed ideas (of which I have plenty). I took my MA dissertation, a short story collection which has been collecting dust in the cupboard, tore out chunks of prose and started playing around with a big red pen. It was a joy to remember that not everything you do creatively has to be used for something or go anywhere - the process is just as important. Sitting there absorbed in my thoughts with scissors, glue and a pint was the point.
Make sure you’re following @side.projectbtn so you don’t miss any future events 🌟

The Flint House counter experience looks super cool without the instagram crop.
I highly recommend booking a spot if you're into good food and great service!

Most people only see the finished work, they never get to see the dummies.
Over the years I’ve printed dozens of small mock-up zines and booklets, all with different sequences. Different formats. Different ideas that never quite worked.
Some were confused. Some were unnecessary.
A few were important stepping stones and all of them have been great lessons learned.
Working with printed photographs teaches you something the screen never will: editing is not just selecting images, it’s building rhythm, tension, and silence between them.
One of those experiments looked too good to stay a dummy. So I turned it into a small publication.
A limited handmade zine, printed in a short run and released through my newsletter.
Pre-orders are now open while I’m away, and I’ll start printing & shipping copies when I return.
If you’re curious about the process behind the work, the link is in the bio and stories.
