The Black Panther Party had 65 survival programs that served the people body and soul. Don’t let anybody fool you— that’s why the federal government labeled them terrorists. The FBI spent countless resources damaging the people and legacy of the Black Panther Party— literally creating a program called COINTELPRO to “discredit, disrupt, and destroy Black leaders”— but because Panthers and many others have carried this legacy for almost 60 years, the
@blackpantherpartymuseum now exists to share the real story from the Panthers’ perspectives.
The Panthers showed the world what People’s Power looks like— serving, organizing, educating, and taking control and reimagining the institutions in our communities— and that shook the rich and powerful to their core. Even the FBI director said he was more scared of their breakfast program than their guns.
There was no better time to open “Survival Pending Revolution: The Black Panther Party Service to the People Programs” than now. The Panthers are the reason you eat in schools. The Panthers are the reason people talk about universal healthcare. The Panthers taught us how to tell stories through art and language before social media. Curating this exhibit at this time was about connecting the dots between past and present movements. It was about repairing the historical memory the War on Drugs robbed my generation of. It was about creating the world, out of love, that we want to live in.
This exhibit was made possible by Panthers who provided input and donated artifacts, from my dedicated team who always went above and beyond, from the Oakland community that constantly offered their time and ideas, and the donors, both large and small, who continue to support this vital independent museum. Thank you for trusting me to curate this exhibit and thank you for supporting the Black Panther Party Museum.
