The Black Panther Party had 65 survival programs that served the people body and soul. Don’t let anybody fool you— that’s why the federal government labeled them terrorists. The FBI spent countless resources damaging the people and legacy of the Black Panther Party— literally creating a program called COINTELPRO to “discredit, disrupt, and destroy Black leaders”— but because Panthers and many others have carried this legacy for almost 60 years, the @blackpantherpartymuseum now exists to share the real story from the Panthers’ perspectives. The Panthers showed the world what People’s Power looks like— serving, organizing, educating, and taking control and reimagining the institutions in our communities— and that shook the rich and powerful to their core. Even the FBI director said he was more scared of their breakfast program than their guns. There was no better time to open “Survival Pending Revolution: The Black Panther Party Service to the People Programs” than now. The Panthers are the reason you eat in schools. The Panthers are the reason people talk about universal healthcare. The Panthers taught us how to tell stories through art and language before social media. Curating this exhibit at this time was about connecting the dots between past and present movements. It was about repairing the historical memory the War on Drugs robbed my generation of. It was about creating the world, out of love, that we want to live in. This exhibit was made possible by Panthers who provided input and donated artifacts, from my dedicated team who always went above and beyond, from the Oakland community that constantly offered their time and ideas, and the donors, both large and small, who continue to support this vital independent museum. Thank you for trusting me to curate this exhibit and thank you for supporting the Black Panther Party Museum. Shout out to @bethaniehinesphotography for the beautiful photos! It didn’t feel real until I saw the photos for myself! After 5+ years taking classes, teaching, researching, and writing, I officially earned my Ph.D. in history from the University of California Berkeley. When I look back I have nothing but praise that God brought me through. Honestly, when I started my program I wasn’t ready academically. There was a lot I still needed to learn and books I should have read that most of my peers had. I felt inadequate because I was one of the few in my program who didn’t come from a research one school and one of very few people of color. Every single year was difficult. I struggled through every semester. But God gave me the strength and the people around me to make it through. Now my daughter will come from two generations of doctors and many generations of people who walked by faith. It’s after those endless nights and sleepless days that I am elated to share that I am Dr. Xavier Buck! Thank you @doreanraye for the photos! 📸 #blackphds #blacklivesmatter #blackhistory #blackpower #education #ucberkeley #calbears #phibetasigma #bluphi

I’ve been making 3-minute videos for seven years. But some history can’t fit in three minutes. The extended brief, the tactical analysis, the sources, the deeper framework — that lives on Substack now. Four articles already up. Founding member spots available. It has been my greatest honor to stand on the shoulders of David Hilliard and Fredrika Newton and lead the @hueypnewtonfoundation into its 30th anniversary. One thing I’ve learned doing this work: for those of us who imagine a world beyond themselves— one where our stories are told accurately, where movements built on love are more important than profit, where liberation finally brings peace— there is a way. We are quite literally creating a world that does not yet exist. The Foundation started by preserving the largest Panther archive in the world, by conducting bus tours in Oakland and photo exhibits across Europe, and planning youth conferences from the Bay to D.C. More recently we installed Dr. Huey P. Newton Way and a bronze bust of Huey in West Oakland. Then we founded the @blackpantherpartymuseum and opened the Dr. Huey P. Newton Research Room. There’s something about the Panther spirit— the way it speaks to the people— that grows constantly. No wonder that even during the years of the greatest FBI repression, the Black Panther Party grew the most. How could the people feeding your babies, healing the sick, protecting the seniors, and caring for the incarcerated be terrorists? Most things the powerful tell us don’t add up, then and now. Which is why the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation exists. In an era of rampant disinformation, we use the archive we built and protected and work with Panthers around the nation to tell the accurate history of the most influential movement of the 20th century. And the impact is only growing. All roads lead to the 60th anniversary of the Black Panther Party on October 15-17, 2026 in Oakland, CA. This is living history, ready to shape our lives today and the many worlds yet to come. Here are some of my favorite photos from the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation’s 30th anniversary! “Don’t it seem we go through life going up and down / Seems the things that turn you on turn you around / Always hurting each other / If it ain’t one thing it’s another / But when the world is down on you / Love’s somewhere around / Well it seems to me that / Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain” - Frankie Beverly

Can Black folks be colonizers too? 👀 Let’s talk about it.
@LynaeVanee sits down with @Evierobbie and @XavierBuck to unpack power, privilege, and what it really means to move through the world as Americans. From Kendrick’s “colonizer” bar to the history behind it all.

🇧🇷 Brazil feels like a second home, but standing here in Rio for the Humanity Summit at G20 hits different. In the first photo, I’m at the largest port where enslaved Africans were brought to the Americas. Those rings—the same ones our ancestors were shackled to—are still there. STILL THERE. In Brazil, African and Indigenous people are resisting land grabs and environmental destruction. It’s the same fight we see in America: the battle for justice, land, and liberation. The Humanity Summit is about tackling global challenges, but let’s be real—there’s no justice without reparations and no future without climate action. Black and Indigenous communities in Brazil and the U.S. face the same systems of exploitation that profit off displacement and destruction. Whether it’s the streets of Oakland or the Quilombos of Brazil, our survival and liberation are intertwined. This isn’t just history. It’s our present. Let’s move like it is. 🌍✊🏽 @humanitysummit thank you for the opportunity to join you all! 🖤 You know I’m home if I have a barber there! #blackhistory #g20 #humanitysummit2024 #blackpower #landback #freetheland #brazil #riodejaneiro #oakland #blackliberation #transatlanticslavetrade #blackpantherparty

“A lot of people resist transition and therefore never allow themselves to enjoy who they are. Embrace the change, no matter what it is; once you do, you can learn about the new world you’re in and take advantage of it.” - Nikki Giovanni ✨ Art Basel Miami 2024 #artbasel #miami #blackart #nikkigiovanni

10 years of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service! PHI BETA SIGMA helped me become the man I am today. I’ve never really had a mentor but I’ve had Sigma Brothers from coast to coast who have poured into me, checked on me, and who are like uncles to my baby girl. The love out of Blu York and the LEGENDARY LAMBDA RHO chapter is something special. But even when I moved to the Bay, the Brothers here supported my work. They showed up in force when we erected a bronze bust of our Brother Huey P. Newton and continue to work with me to preserve his legacy. The work of a Sigma Man is never done. One decade in the Frat and there’s a lot more coming. Stay tuned… #bluphi #phibetasigma #1914 #zetaphibetasigma #stjohns #bluyorksigmas
