Driving sustainable impact through partnerships
First National Bank Namibia, through the FirstRand Namibia Group, reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and strategic partnerships during the commemoration of Environmental Knowledge Day, held under the theme āDriving Sustainable Impact Through Strategic Partnerships.ā
The event brought together leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector to reflect on the urgent need for collaborative action in addressing Namibiaās environmental challenges.
Today, First National Bank Namibia marked Environmental Knowledge Day by committing N$4 million to the Community Conservation Fund of Namibia to support a Payments for Ecosystem Services framework.
This investment is more than funding, itās a bold step toward unlocking sustainable financing for conservation and rural development in Namibia.
Community Conservation Fund's CEO Pandeni M. Kapia highlighted that, early support like this builds trust, validates the model, and positions Namibia to attract even greater donor and private sector investment.
Together, through strategic partnerships, we can turn environmental challenges into lasting opportunities.
Namibia has officially recognised its first three Other Effective Areaābased Conservation Measures (OECMs), showing that conservation goes beyond protected areas.
OECMs are places managed to deliver longāterm biodiversity conservation, even though they are not formally declared protected areas, proving that people and nature can thrive together across working landscapes.
ā NamibRand Nature Reserve
ā ProNamib Nature Reserve
ā Canyon Nature Park
Together, these sites conserve around 318,480 hectares of land managed for biodiversity.
The certification followed a national validation workshop in Windhoek led by @ministry_of_environment_nam with partners including @namibia_nature_foundation , @mfmrnamibia , WWF Namibia, communal conservancies and others, supporting Namibiaās progress toward the 30 by 30 biodiversity target.

STRENGTHEN CBNRM: Minister Indileni Daniel opened the 2026 National CBNRM Conference in Windhoek on Wednesday, saying government plans to repeal the Nature Conservation Ordinance and replace it with a new Wildlife and Protected Areas Management law, while also reviewing the Forest Act.
The changes aim to strengthen the Community Based Natural Resource Management programme by giving communities more control over conservancies and forests to increase benefits.
NACSO Board Chairperson Dr Selma Lendelvo said sustained support and a unified approach are key to long term success. She said cooperation is vital to keep the programme central to rural development.
At the same event, MEFT Executive Director Sikongo Haihambo said CBNRM remains central to Namibiaās conservation and tourism sectors.
