The Emerald Screen Pergola is an important architectural feature in classical Chinese gardens. It is typically constructed from bamboo or wood, forming roofless corridors, pavilions, and walls. Climbing plants are then grown to eventually cover the walls and roofs.
Wutopia Lab used the feather-like shape of leaves as a prototype to create various combinations of wall and roof structures along the 1.2-kilometer stretch. These structures open, close, stand alone, overlap, and even disappear, redefining the previously monotonous design of the trellis corridor.

“The Nine-Square-Meter Home” is the first piece unveiled in my spatial concept exhibition
Bond to Shanghai at the Shanghai Art Museum.
It reveals an extreme prototype of Shanghai’s housing reality.
Within these nine square meters, a family of five is meticulously arranged.
This is not mere compromise, but a finely calculated survival layout.
Space is vertically layered: sleeping, living, storage—each function compressed to the limits of the human body, yet still orderly.
This form arises from long-standing housing scarcity.
The interior is squeezed to its utmost, pushing daily life to spill outward:
stoves placed outside, washing machines in corridors, buckets set in stairwells.
This is not casual romance,
but deliberate calculation—
how to survive at the edge of eviction,
how to expand space with minimal conflict.
It is a daily micro-battle.
And yet, inside there are still cats, still flowers, still carefully tended corners.
Because Shanghai people may accept cramped spaces,
but they never give up on loving life.
The home may shrink,
but life retains its warmth.

Wutopia Lab presents Verdant Ridges, a metamorphosis from industrial ruin to a profound narrative landscape in Suzhou, China. By bypassing conventional renovation methods, the studio has created a "spatial biography" of the artist Tang Bohu, enveloping the original concrete skeleton of the Xinguang Silk Weaving Factory in a layered skin of vibrant green metal mesh that evokes classical Jiangnan landscapes.
The sensory journey continues inside through the "Midnight Door," where the exuberant exterior colors give way to a monochromatic sanctuary of black, white, and gray. Here, the walls are textured to mimic the cún brushstrokes of traditional ink painting, guiding visitors through undulating "mountain" partitions toward an I-shaped stage. Verdant Ridges stands as a testament to the power of storytelling, proving that modern interventions can serve as vessels for cultural memory while remaining boldly experimental.

Today, on New Year’s Day 2026, the exhibition ”Today, I Am Inextricably Linked to Shanghai“ (Wenyu Spatial Concept Exhibition) opened successfully at the Shanghai Art Museum. This event is part of the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the Shanghai Art Museum and was realized with the generous support of friends and colleagues.
The exhibition is composed of seven distinct parts, with a new section launching every two months. The theme for today‘s opening is ”Home and Dignity.“
Breaking away from traditional architectural exhibitions that rely on documents, photos, models, and videos, this exhibition adopts a 1:1 full-scale construction approach. This immersive method aims to express the theme that Shanghai is Sophistication.
The exhibition will run for one year. We warmly welcome everyone to visit.
