Producer's orders 📋 Three days, a lot of material — came in thinking we had enough for an album and an EP, but ended up with enough for two albums! Guitar in six different tunings, mandolin, and a short traditional round thrown in for good measure. Bringing the total number of tracks up to 17! Somewhere in the middle of it all, this appeared on the floor... Day 1 at The Woodrooms with @wraudio . Got my station set up with @biffroxby — and also set up a couple of cameras. The aim for this week's sessions was to lock in all my guitar and mandolin parts. When we recorded together with a band back in October, a lot of my parts were done to demos I'd recorded at home, with some being done together with the band in the big live room. So the goal was to finalise my guitar and mandolin. Next, after Biff has done some editing, we'll work out what else we think these recordings need to help finish them off. Long day, focused start. The day is come. Letter's Throw Away is out into the world, fingers well and truly crossed that the Royal Mail gets it to its destination. I hope it connects with the romantics and rustic amongst you. This goes out to anyone I've ever written to over the years and who's returned the favour. You've not only brightened my day and made it feel like Chrismas on any given day, but you’ve helped get me through some tough times too. Thank you. So do yourself and a loved one a favour: treat them and send them the gift of a letter, a single-page scribble, a haiku on the back of a postcard, a scrunched diner napkin. Show them you're thinking about them. That you care. That you took the time, however long or short, to sit down and write a few words. From your heart to your mind to the tips of your fingers and down onto the page. I'd like to give a massive thanks to my wonderful friends and bandmates, you make everything better. Most proud to be sharing the first live video from mine and Pete Whitfield’s upcoming album. ‘Nags Head’ is performed with members of the Hallé, Liverpool Philharmonic, and Manchester Camerata, with music composed and conducted by my wondrous collaborator Pete @pete__whitfield @aminaflute @sbsviolin The poem finds itself in a long forgotten pub in Little Lever, that was converted into a chemist many moons ago, so I’ve picked up a few prescriptions with my Nan when I was a little boy but I never actually raised a glass in that space. However, many of my ancestors did, this is something of a time travelling poem of folklore, loss, grief, and sobriety. It’s been one of the greatest privileges in my life as a poet to work with these amazing musicians. We’ve recorded an album of 16 poems, releasing later in the year, with another music video coming soon, and some live shows to follow. Please share far and wide and keep and eye out for upcoming releases dates. Some snaps taken by @joeviomalin during our first four days of recording in Manchester, 16th–19th October. We spent the days at @wraudio and set up camp in Irlam — complete with a few rounds of cards in between sessions. On Wednesday the 15th, producer @biffroxby and I put together an ambitious plan: record all the core band parts in just four days. And I’m very happy to say… we absolutely smashed it.
