We’ve teamed up with Aburra Press to print our graphic novel, Therion. Barry and the team walked us through a range of paper options. There was crisp white to warmer, yellow-toned stocks, each with its own texture and feel. We landed right in the middle with an 80gsm natural white. It has a subtle “toothy” texture which is perfectly aligned with the grit of the artwork, giving the pages that tactile, grounded feel. Nothing too glossy. Something that feels closer to a classic manga in your hands. Choosing the paper means we’re very close to the finish line, it’s one of the many important elements that significantly impact the final result. Final checks are underway. We’ve printed out the full 90 pages of Therion: Volume 1 and are going through everything page by page. A final check for any minor errors. There’s something different about seeing it off-screen. Getting the pages in hand gives you a much clearer sense of pacing, scale, and how each moment lands. These prints are just tests — not the final paper stock — I’ll have a print update for you soon. The book will also include additional pages of bonus art including character designs and sketches. Therion, the first volume of our original graphic novel, is approaching completion. Every page now has its final dialogue, speech bubbles, and sound effects in place. Manga artist @aly.eii has added a whole new layer to the book. The speech bubble lines feel like part of the world, with slightly rough edges. I really wanted them to feel integrated into each page, rather than just slapped on. The custom typography for sound effects adds another layer of immersion, which is especially important in a world where the voice of nature plays a big role in the story — whether it’s the snap of a twig, the howl of the wind, or a low growl from the darkness of the forest. Sam and I are now going through the final pass. This is about tightening the dialogue and checking every page and panel before we send it to print. With close to 500 individual panels, it needs a fine-tooth comb. T-shirts, hoodies, stickers, and posters — everything is now being made. I can’t wait to slip on my Therion hoodie this winter. Inking for Therion is complete ✒️ Inking is where the final linework, textures, halftones, and shading are added to the page. There’s a long process to get to this stage, starting with script-writing, blueprints of each page, rough sketches of each panel, and rounds of feedback until we land on a complete page with final linework. I’m very excited to tease these isolated panels inked by our principal artist Tahlia Pearce. Tahlia has fully immersed herself in the world of Therion, and her crisp linework and gritty textures have been integral to crafting the mood and story. Our art style draws inspiration from a range of manga artists, including Makoto Yukimura (Vinland Saga) @mr.isayama (Attack On Titan) and Hiromu Arakawa (Full Metal Alchemist. Whether it’s linework, panel composition, or just the mood overall, these artists have shaped our direction in different ways, helping us craft the gritty and intense mood of Therion. Now we move into the next production phase: Lettering. This is where we add speech bubbles, dialogue and sound effects on each phase. This step isn’t just about writing compelling words, it’s a graphic design task that involves integrating shapes on to the page so that they feel part of a cohesive work. While we’re making serious progress, Therion won’t be ready this December. I had hoped to have everything released by Christmas, but rushing the final stages wouldn’t do the book justice. Rather than chasing an imaginary end-of-year deadline, we’re now aiming for a January release. These are some early concepts for the character design of Taban. We initially wrote him as someone with a hard exterior, but deeply frustrated inside. A man desperate to prove himself. @timmcburnie worked on these designs in 2021. He captured this personality so well. In these sketches Taban appears capable, yet defensive. We modelled his attire off the traditional Mongolian deel - a coat designed for cold weather protection, separated at the legs making it easy to mount a horse. When we pivoted the direction of the series, it wasn’t just Taban’s attire that changed. His personality shifted from short tempered and impulsive, to patient and plotting. His ambition and desire to prove himself still lingers beneath the surface, but he goes about it in a subtle and calculated way. This original design reflects the internal nature of Taban - the frustration slowly bubbling to the surface. Therion is launching on @kickstarter Thursday July 31st.
