New #medicines are critical to fight disease, but there is a bottleneck in getting them to market. There are far more new drug candidates discovered than the pharmaceutical industry can afford to put through the costly process of trial and development. @benjamineliu , CEO of @Formation_Bio , says a pinch point lies in knowledge work, patient recruitment and data handling - all areas where #AI can help, let companies run trials more efficiently, reducing the risk of a costly failure, and making savings that will eventually reach the patient. Here, he explains how. Benjamine Liu is a contributor to a new World Economic Forum report, in collaboration with @BCG , Strategic Choices in the Age of AI: Shaping the Future of Life Sciences. Formation Bio is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Unicorn community, a network of hyper-growth companies at the forefront of disruption in their industries, and valued at more than $1 billion. ‘If we don’t start with digital habits, then all is lost.’ Psychologist @JonathanHaidt teaches a course at @NYUStern on flourishing. Over the years, he has noticed a barrier to students reaching their potential: their smartphone habits. Here, Haidt outlines his one key rule for getting ahead of the doom-loop and ensuring you start each day on the right footing, and he warns that societies need to prepare themselves for the cognitive impacts of the AI revolution. Jonathan Haidt was a guest on the World Economic Forum’s #MeetTheLeader video podcast. Tap the link in our bio to watch the full episode.

It’s a mistake to assume that Africa has a lack of data, says Kate Kallot. In fact, it has a vast wealth of data, but most of it is scattered, analogue and hard to access, due to a shortage of data infrastructure. This shortage has real-world impacts. It means that artificial intelligence across the world, and especially climate and investment models created in Africa, are built on data from elsewhere. It also leaves African countries prey to outsiders who want to tap into its #data resources - and repeat the damaging extractive practices of the past. Here, @KaliKalo , CEO of @Aminitech.ai , which builds data infrastructure in the Global South, explains why #Africa must defend its data sovereignty in the new global digital economy, and gives some practical steps governments can take. Food waste contains valuable chemical building blocks, and Hyfé is working to rescue and refine them, so they can be used as new ingredients. The start-up's reactor pulls fruit and vegetable #waste apart, refining peel and pulp into bioactive compounds, fibres and dextrose, which can be used in a range of new products. Here, Hyfé's founder Michelle Ruiz explains how it works. Inside the device you are reading this on right now, a critical component you might never have heard of is beavering away. ‘Instruction set architectures’ (ISA) are the interface between the hardware and software in every computing device. They are essentially sets of rules that translate code into instructions that microchips can understand and execute. Without them, no device - whether a smartphone or a supercomputer - would be able to function. Most ISAs are proprietary and used under licence. This costs money - and it restricts the ability of users to design custom chips based on their specific requirements. RISC-V is an open-source ISA that is free to use, designed explicitly to be customised, and which is already found in billions of devices and computers around the world. Here’s how it works. As the pace of digitalization and electrification continues to accelerate, the supply of critical minerals and metals needed to meet demand is coming under increasing pressure. A World Economic Forum report tracks these materials across value chains and suggests how companies can navigate this shifting landscape. Tap the link in our bio to read it.

Replacing petroleum-derived jet fuels with sustainable alternatives is key to decarbonizing flying. This switch alone could get the aviation sector almost three-quarters of the way to net zero. But today, less than 1% of aviation fuel used around the world is sustainable. So what’s the hold-up? Here, Adam Klauber, Chief Sustainability Officer at @officialWorldEnergy and Brian Peers, Global Head of Sustainable Transport and Fuels at @HSBC provide some answers - and explain what’s needed for#sustainable aviation fuels to reach the scale required to make a real impact. A World Economic Forum report offers an overview of the main risks and opportunities affecting the aviation sector’s progress on decarbonization, based on interviews with executives from the Forum’s aviation community. Nobel laureate Peter Howitt is known for his work on ‘creative destruction’, a model of growth whereby innovation creates value, but renders technologies and jobs obsolete in the process. Here, he explains why he believes ‘we’ll all be winners’ from #AI - and why the doom-sayers of previous technologies were proven wrong. Howitt, a professor emeritus at @BrownU , also discusses how governments can help those whose #jobs will be impacted. The latest Technology Convergence Report, written in collaboration with @Capgemini , explores how organizations can turn complex new technologies into real-world solutions. The global travel and tourism sector has bounced back in recent years, with experts predicting it will generate $16.5 trillion in GDP by 2035. But recent geopolitical and economic uncertainties are just some of the challenges the sector faces, in addition to rising friction between locals and visitors, and skills and talent shortages, which all place pressure on cities, infrastructure and local communities. Here are 7 urgent factors shaping how destinations and cities manage visitor growth. The World Economic Forum, in partnership with the @saudi.mt and in collaboration with @Kearney , has announced the launch of Beyond Tourism Impact Stars, to recognize and scale business-led solutions to the most pressing challenges facing the #travel and #tourism industry. You receive an email chain with your boss copied in, approving a payment you need to make. All looks legitimate, right? But in this new era of AI-powered #phishing scams, it may not be. Here, James Dolph, CISO at @insideGuidewire , talks through the dizzying new developments in phishing, where large language models can be used to fabricate entire email threads containing your boss and other colleagues, urging you to hand over valuable data. Dolph also discusses how #cybercrime has changed over his career, progressing from lone hackers in a basement to organized crime syndicates structured like businesses, with support teams for ransomware, and financial advisors to aid money laundering. A new report explores how AI technologies can enhance cyber defence capabilities within organizations. Tap the link in our bio to read it.
