Picture a crowded bar in New Orleans. It's hot. It's humid. Cramped onto the tiny stage is a band playing horns, drums and a stand-up bass. At the front, a long-haired singer pours his heart into every song and story. Today, @sallybabys.silverdollars brings that energy to World Cafe. Plus, that captivating frontperson, Sal Geloso talks about how the band came together, and about about the big break they got after entering the NPR Music Tiny Desk Contest, which led to an official Tiny Desk Concert earlier this year.

On today's episode of the Cafe, @amygrantofficial joins us to talk about her first album of original material in 13 years, The Me That Remains. She wrote it in the aftermath of a serious bike accident that left her with a head injury and a lengthy recovery. Grant talks about what pulled her away from her charity work and ultimately brought her back into the studio with Nashville legend Mac McAnally.

@youbet unpacks their song "Worship" from their self-titled record on today's episode of World Cafe. "I would say there's the theme of playfulness, cursed family trauma vibes, the devil's in there..." says songwriter Nick Llobet. Today, we welcome back Pigeons Playing Ping Pong @pigeonsplaying to World Cafe. The four-piece funk and psychedelic jam band out of Baltimore first tripped our wire back in 2020, around the release of Presto. Since then, the band has cemented its place in the upper echelon of 21st century jam bands. On their latest album, Feed the Fire, they set out to release their brightest and most expansive studio album yet. It also gets the band ever closer to sounding like they do live on stage. The full mini concert is now on YouTube and at worldcafe.org.

@thenewpornographers are a band, but these days, the songwriting process starts with frontman Carl Newman, working alone. Today, Newman and keyboardist Kathryn Calder join @rahrahraina to talk about The New Pornographers’ new album The Former Site Of, and how it explores themes of change and impermanence. They also speak candidly on a challenging period of change for the band, and how the arrest of their former drummer last year shifted their perspective. Watch the full session at worldcafe.org
