HOW MUCH OF THE LEDGE ARE WE LOSING?
As you may remember from Human Urban’s media statement last year, a “notable portion” of the ledge is being kept for us to skate.
On the Cantonment Street facade, there will be 6 new and existing openings created. We have been told that the reinstatement of all original 1927 openings on this facade (where the ledge is) is a non-negotiable condition that has been set by
@dplh.wa ,the midcentury portions of the building do not have these protections.
Some of these openings have sections of ledge in front of them, and a northern portion of this facade is being removed entirely. We have asked for these removed portions of ledge to be retained for use elsewhere in the development or to be handed over to
@waskateboardingassociation
The removal of some of our most skated sections of ledge will however create new opportunities for us - new ledge ends, new ledge gaps and it’ll force us to adapt and create new lines. Woolies has changed multiple times over the last 4 decades, and we’ve always adapted and grown with it.
The first portion lost is going to be cut in front of the iconic window, and the window will be turned back into a door, as it was in 1927.
The second portion lost is where the bricked up roller door is behind the “Wool Stories” piece with the dog. You can see the outline of the original doorway.
The final portion lost is everything north of and including the roller door ledge in front of Clancy’s. This section of the building is being removed entirely.
In total, around 20% of the ledge is being removed, or around 19.5m. This leaves approximately 77m or 80% of the ledge in place to skate for years to come. Although this may feel like a higher percentage due to the loss of our favourite sections.
At this stage, construction is expected to start in early 2026 - make the most of this final year, it’s the end of a golden era, and the beginning of a new one.
