I visited Material Exhibitions for the opening of “Loot Box,” a survey of recent works by Kansas City Mo-based artist Garry Noland. Noland assembles his works by combining studio-wrought artifacts with items that come to hand, like hardware (multi-color anti-skid tape), cabinetry, and archival photographs. He credits his discoveries to chance and randomness, but I read them as the results of careful placement and orientation of himself in his home environment, carrying on a lifetime endeavor which goes back generations in his family. Midwesterners know the necessity of maintaining one’s balance and bearings in a flat landscape against a distant horizon, and the intelligence, wit and humanity he reveals in his works don’t come from nowhere. #chicagoart #materialexhibitions #forwardfolio #worksonpaper #collage
