MEET THE ARTISTS BEHIND THE WORK BENEATH
Liz Ortiz is a Fort Collins-based printmaker, multidisciplinary artist, and founder of Mad Hare Press. Through printmaking, photography, and mixed media, her work explores identity, memory, cultural heritage, and the emotional realities that shape artistic life. Alongside her studio practice, she facilitates accessible printmaking workshops and co-created The Work Beneath | Artist Talk Series.
Stacey Sickler is the artist behind Peaced Together Art, where collage, pottery, and playful creative exploration became tools for healing and self reconnection. Through workshops like Ugly Art Night, Stacey encourages others to quiet the inner critic, embrace imperfection, and reconnect with creativity through curiosity and play.
Together, Liz and Stacey return for a one year reflection through

One year ago, we hosted one of the very first conversations in The Work Beneath | Artist Talk Series called But I’m Not an Artist.
Now, one year later, we return with a new conversation reflecting on what has changed:
From “But I’m Not an Artist” to “I Am an Artist, But I’m Not Creating”: A Year Later
A conversation about burnout, artistic identity, creative exhaustion, survival, and what it means to remain connected to creativity during difficult seasons of life.
Over the past year, both of us have experienced shifts in our relationship to art, productivity, and creative practice. This conversation is not about polished answers or easy solutions. It is about honesty, reflection, vulnerability, and community connection around experiences many artists quietly carry.
