Higher doesn’t mean harder. 🎤 If you’re pushing for high notes, you’re doing more harm than good—causing strain, pitch issues, and fatigue. True power comes from breath and body support, not your throat. 💪 When you engage your diaphragm, intercostals, and abdominals correctly, you maintain steady airflow and subglottal pressure, so your vocal folds can vibrate freely and hit higher notes with ease. Watch vocal coach Kurt Wolf break down how to sing higher, easier, and stronger - without straining your voice. #singingtips #vocalcoach #vocaltraining #singersofinstagram #learnsinging #voicecoach #vocalhealth

A stronger high mix voice doesn’t come from pushing harder — it comes from learning how to shape the sound more efficiently. In this one-on-one session, Kurt works with @Maye5h of @Tzarina.official and @worrymonsterband on strengthening his high mix voice for demanding rock vocals using two key strategies: 1) Improving vocal cord compression/closure 2) Using acoustic shaping through vowel and mouth position In this exercise, moving between “GOO” and “GO” changes the shape of the vocal tract, which influences resonance balance, airflow resistance, and how efficiently the voice coordinates through higher notes. The narrower “GOO” shape can help encourage more release and easier upper-range access, while opening toward “GO” introduces more space, presence, and intensity into the tone. At the same time, the consonant and coordination patterns in the exercise help train the vocal cords to close more efficiently without relying on excess breath pressure or pushing. Together, these strategies help singers build stronger, more connected high notes while maintaining flexibility and consistency — especially in contemporary rock singing where the voice needs both power and endurance. 🐺 Save this for your next practice session, and head to wolfstudiosnyc.com to start training with us today #mixvoice #rockvocals #vocaltraining #highnotes #vocalcoach

Most singers practice for ideal conditions but professional performers train for the unpredictable ones. If you’re preparing for gigs, tours, rehearsals, or live shows, your voice needs more than the ability to sing the songs “correctly” in a practice room. It needs adaptability, endurance, consistency, and enough coordination to hold up under pressure. That’s why every serious singer should be able to: • sing their material accurately a cappella • adjust songs into multiple keys • finish an entire set without vocal fatigue or loss of control These skills expose whether your pitch, breath pacing, vocal coordination, stamina, and ear training are actually stable — or if you’re relying too heavily on muscle memory and ideal circumstances. Live performance changes everything: different acoustics, band volume, fatigue, stress, sleep, adrenaline, emotional intensity, and room energy all affect how the voice responds. The goal of vocal training isn’t just to hit difficult notes. It’s to build a voice that stays reliable when conditions are less than perfect. Sometimes the biggest improvements in your voice come from the smallest adjustments. A slight change to your jaw tension, vowels, breathing, volume, or vocal coordination can completely shift how your voice feels and functions — often instantly. The goal isn’t just to “hit the notes,” but to build a voice that feels freer, more consistent, and easier to rely on. In this carousel, we break down 7 practical vocal techniques that can help improve tone, reduce vocal strain, strengthen your mix voice, and create better vocal control — whether you’re singing pop, rock, Broadway, or contemporary styles. From speech-based coordination and vowel shaping to SOVT exercises and breath timing, these are the same concepts professional singers use to build healthier, more efficient vocal technique. Save this for your next practice session, and head to wolfstudiosnyc.com to start training with a vocal coach who can help you build a voice that works consistently in real performance settings. #vocaltraining #singingtips #vocalcoach #mixvoice #singingtechnique

Most singers change their volume based on the room they’re singing in. Professional performers learn to choose their volume based on the emotional environment of the song. In this song breakdown from @andJulietbway , Broadway performer @Reese_Britts works through one of the biggest challenges singers face: trying to “project” emotional high notes by pushing harder. The reality is that higher notes—especially through the masculine bridge and mix voice—often feel louder because the vocal cords compress more firmly and the tone becomes brighter, denser, and more energized. But efficient high notes aren’t necessarily coming from more volume or force. That’s why these pivotal performances still need intimacy, even in large venues. Instead of oversinging to fill the room, the goal is to maintain the emotional intention of the song while allowing vocal coordination, resonance, and cord compression to create the excitement naturally. The audience should feel intensity from the tone—not from vocal strain. ⭐ Save this for your next rehearsal, and click the link in our bio to join our Vocal Technique Group Classes where we break down real songs, vocal coordination, and performance technique every month! Where does true vocal strength come from? Not from pushing more air or singing louder, but from how efficiently your vocal cords come together to resist the aiflow moving through them. What most singers perceive as “power” is actually cord compression—a coordinated closure of the vocal folds that creates a clearer, more stable, and more resonant tone. When that closure is inefficient, the body compensates with excess tension, and that’s where strain starts to build. One of the most effective ways to train this is through stop-plosive consonants like ‘B’ and ‘G’. These sounds briefly resist airflow, creating back pressure that encourages the vocal cords to meet more firmly and consistently—without forcing from the outside. That’s why a pattern like “Buh-Buh-Buh” or adding a light “rev” helps build strength. You’re not just making sound—you’re training the coordination that allows your voice to stay connected, especially as you move into your mix. Real strength isn’t about effort, it’s about how efficiently your system responds under demand. Want to train with Wolf Studios? Many singers think of vocal cool-downs as optional, but they play a key role in vocal health, recovery, and long-term performance. After singing, your voice doesn’t automatically return to normal. It can remain in a higher-effort, high-coordination state, with residual tension and inefficient patterns still active beneath the surface. A well-structured vocal cool-down routine helps guide the voice back to a more natural, easy speaking state by gradually reducing effort, rebalancing airflow and vocal fold coordination, and releasing excess tension. This isn’t just “light singing” at the end of a session. Effective cool-down exercises for singers typically include a combination of breath and body reset, gentle descending work, semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises, light humming, and low-load phonation. When done consistently, vocal cool-downs can help reduce vocal fatigue, support recovery after singing, and maintain a more responsive, reliable instrument over time. If you’re serious about improving your vocal technique and longevity, your cool-down deserves as much intention as your warm-up. Looking for a simple, guided routine? Our Lucky 7 Vocal Cool Down walks you through a practical 7-step process you can use after any practice or performance—no piano required. It’s normal to feel nerves before a performance, even as a professional singer. Instead of letting them control your voice, learn how to let them fuel it. In this session, we’re coaching @dannyrosell_ as she prepares for a Spanish vocal competition, performing “Corazón Hambriento.” During the lesson, we spoke about managing pre-show anxiety and how to prevent your nerves getting in the way of your performance. A key part of the work is understanding that what you feel while you’re singing translates directly to the audience. If the voice feels tense or strained, the audience will pick up on that. When the voice feels free and supported, the performance tends to land in a much more impactful way. Taking a deep, relaxed breath before singing helps calm the body and mind and prepares the voice for what’s next, especially in a ballad like this. You can also incorporate breathing exercises in your pre-show warm-up to help ease tension. Nerves aren’t something to eliminate. If you care about your craft, they’re going to be there. The goal is to train your voice consistently so that even when you feel nervous, you still feel in control and can use that energy in a way that supports the performance. 🎤 Preparing for a performance or audition?
