Some decisions have unforeseeable consequences that alter the course of our lives. My decision to offer to work at WNYU 89.1FM 40 years ago had massive repercussions and I thank my young self for having the foresight to head up to the radio station when I moved to New York City in 1986.
College Radio was hugely important in America at the time. We broke acts that would become global superstars and also spun the tunes nobody would take a chance on. There was a sense of a mission and a tightly knit comradery on the WNYU team - we were family.
I spent a lot of time at the radio station, first as PSA Director and then as the first woman Program Director. In the 80’s I hosted shows including the evening drive program The New Afternoon Show and I started a new psychedelic 60’s psychedeic/garage/prog/krautrock show called ‘Plastic Tales from the Marshmallow Dimension’. WNYU helped me land a job as a radio host in Japan in 1989 and a couple of years later, it helped me secure a dream job producing syndicated radio shows in which I interviewed many of my heroes including Brian Eno and Ryuichi Sakamoto amongst others.
WNYU was also instrumental in my journey as a DJ. In 1991 I came back to 89.1FM to host Soul School on which I spun dance classics and shortly afterwards I hosted the live house mix show Club 89. Alongside my own sets, I invited many guests for interviews and mixes including Lil Louis, Romanthony, Louie Vega, Francois K and David Mancuso (he was the only one too shy to speak :).
So its more than an honour to be invited back to WNYU 40 years after I first started. It was touching to see how the sense of mission and family is still there! Thank you to Benny Sun of Nightclubbing for the invitation and if you want to listen back to my mix you can check it out on WNYU’s YouTube & the interview on my Soundcloud or via my link tree. Thanks for listening.
