Creative House: International Residency
IVAN SMITH
Künstlerkolonie Fichtelgebirge launched their International Artist-in-Residence Programme in the Fichtelgebirge, with the British Artist Ivan Smith.
Ivan Smith has worked extensively on international platform developing commissions, residencies and exhibitions for the past thirty years.
Ivan Smith lived and work for two weeks in Bad Berneck im Fichtelgebirge, Bavaria, Germany, and marked interesting locations and objects in this small town, stimulating conversations with the population about town regeneration. During his stay, Ivan Smith worked visibly on the streets, bridges and parks of Bad Berneck, and people were invited to participate.
The installations were of a fleeting nature – in the few hours of their existence they aimed to mark locations in the small town Bad Berneck in order to engage citizens and visitors to talk about the future of this formerly highly successful spa town. Ivan Smith’s work was meant to create a starting point for an ‘experimental mapping’ of the town, aiming to gain new perspectives for town development.
The ‘fleeting installations’ documented photographically and shown at an informal event at the end of the residency. Part of the artwork was also featured in an innovative QR-Code Project in Bad Berneck.
The Project took place in collaboration with the town Bad Berneck, curators -Sabine Gollner and Nigel Amson from Creative House.

IVAN SMITH
A multi-media site-specific sculptural installation, which explores the science of forensics, pathology and criminology.
Bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) is one of several specialties in the field of forensic science. The use of bloodstains as evidence is not new; however, the application of modern science has brought it to a higher level. New technologies, especially advances in DNA analysis, are available for detectives and criminologists to use in solving crimes and apprehending offenders.
The science of bloodstain pattern analysis applies scientific knowledge from other fields to solve practical problems. Bloodstain pattern analysis draws on the scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. If an analyst follows a scientific process, this applied science can produce strong, solid evidence, making it an effective tool for investigators.
Experiments with blood have shown that a drop of blood tends to form into a sphere in flight rather than the artistic teardrop shape. This is what one would expect of a fluid in freefall. The formation of the sphere is a result of surface tension that binds the molecules together.
This spherical shape of blood in flight is important for the calculation of the angle of impact (incidence) of blood spatter when it hits a surface. That angle will be used to determine the point from which the blood originated which is called the Point of Origin or more appropriately the Area of Origin.
Having begun to explore the macabre hinterland of life taking through global conflict in the exhibitions ‘The Good, the Bad & the Ugly’ at Ashish Balram Nagpal Gallery Mumbai, ‘Tension’ at the Gooden Gallery London and ‘Conflict a state of disharmony’ at the Museum & Art Gallery Derby, I am looking more closely at the abstract details of the forensic investigation into the aftermath of extreme violence.

Con_flict: a state of disharmony is a startling body of work that includes sculpture, installation, photography and drawn line to present us with the residue of despair and hopelessness caused by conflict.
Exploding out of the gallery and into the museum collection, this exhibition articulates an ongoing exploration of conflict. Derbyshire artist, Ivan Smith employs his signature action men as an emblem to illustrate the impact of global violence. By doing this he invites us to consider how mass media may exploit stories of destruction and aggression and what part this plays in contemporary world conflict.

Fruga Art Trail residency
This is the third of three sculptural interventions Ivan developed during the residency that fit into the landscape of Fruga, a rugged mountain top space in the heart of Rab island.
The bungee rope, the common thread in the works, acts as a manmade interference, each employment having a different relationship with its environment, whether being used to suspend rocks, anchoring or gently wrapping.
Although the three works are separated by large distances a commonality is evident through the use of materials, developing a dialogue between the works and their environment.
