Just like the compact truck for which he's named, Ranger is packed and powerful, with a turbo engine and 4-paw drive. He has the kindest eyes and loves hugs. Born to Brewster and Hillary, his litter is our 'car series' with siblings Vega, Bronco, Enzo, Pinto & Zephyr. He likes running in lead if paired with a strong female but is also good in 'wheel position" (nearest the sled) for extra power. Did you know that 'wheel position' is named for hook and ladder fire trucks? Back in the day, a fireman would ride atop the ladder in a steering booth at the back to swing the long truck wide around concerns. “Wheel dogs" were trained to do the same so sleds wouldn't get hung up on tight corners!
Meet our staff! Dogsled guide Ian Hanesworth. Ian grew up in the Driftless aarea of Southeastern Minnesota but now spends most of their time in Western Montana, where they’ve been working on organic vegetable farms for three seasons. Ian spent several summers working at North Country Canoe Outfitters in Ely during college and took every opportunity to go solo excursions into the wilderness. Ian has experience assisting with guided backpacking trips and teaching wildcrafting skills in the beautiful coastal landscape of Big Sur, California. Ian has a deep love for winter and the landscapes of Northern Minnesota.

Behind the scenes: our sleds. Wintergreen is the only lodge designed for and devoted exclusively to recreational dogsledding. Our fleet of sleds includes 3 sizes. On lodge-based trips, we use our "solo" sleds driven by one person with a 2 or 3-dog team, and our "duo" sleds with extra-wide platforms on the back that allow 2 persons to stand comfortably side-by-side and drive the sled together with a 4-6 dog team. On camping trips, we use our "freighters," which are driven by 2 people with a 6 to 8 dog team.
Remember, Wintergreen features a complete "hands-on" experience. You'll not only be mushing your own dog team but you're also welcome to be as involved as you'd like in the harnessing, feeding, bedding and caring for your team.
