Absolutely thrilled to present my project 'Origins' this month at
@operanorth as part of my 'Resonance' artistic residency: it's going to be a very special sharing of deeply intimate music, experiences and culture. After studying at Leeds uni years ago, I never would've imagined I'd get to come back as an artist in Residence!
I am very proud of my diverse heritage, but like many people with mixed roots, it has been a long journey to feel comfortable in my own skin; and the journey will probably continue for the rest of my life. What I've never done though, is explore my background through music, the ancestral journeys, stories and intergenerational threads that all ended up in Liverpool albeit from very far away places.
This is actually the first time I get to be the protagonist of my own music with other musicians, which is both an honour and quite an unnerving experience. Even though I do show up for myself, I constantly second guess my music, my creativity, my talents. This residency will be my first step to moving forward and embracing my artistic self with confidence and grace.
I feel safe and sound in the hands of my dear friends and fellow artists accompanying me on this journey. My heart is full of gratitude
