Opening Next Week: ANCIENT FORM | MODERN VISION The Radical Legacy of Antiquity in 20th Century British Art In collaboration with Elliot Davies @elliotdavies.art 1 May - 3 July 2026 16 Savile Row, London For the greatest Modern British artists, the allure of ancient western sculpture was less a retreat into the past, than a radical leap into the future. The ‘art-quake’ of European modernism reached London not just through the studios of Brancusi, Picasso and the galleries of Paris, but through the quiet corridors of the British Museum. The ‘re-discovery’ of non-western art clearly had a huge influence on twentieth century British artists, but ancient western sculpture still cast a long shadow, affecting the fundamental tenets of their practice: their choice of materials, methods of creation, formal language, subject matter and iconography. While the fragmentary nature of most works that survived from classical antiquity provided an aesthetic precedent for the modern pursuit of abstraction, earlier Cycladic sculpture showcased a radical formal minimalism that reduced art to its essential elements - representing a salve to what the moderns saw as the decorative excesses of the Victorian era. Ben Nicholson was particularly inspired by Cycladic sculpture and wrote to Barbara Hepworth in 1956 that: “…I don’t know of any work which I feel goes better with mine unless it’s Cycladic or some other primitive works” • Beard, L. (ed.), Ben Nicholson Writings and Ideas, 2019, pp.69-70. Indeed, Nicholson had some wonderful examples in his own collection, one of which - a fragmentary Cycladic Torso - is included in our exhibition. It is from this happy union of ancient and modern aesthetics that we explore the enduring resonance of ancient art from the Early Bronze Age to the Roman period, in the work of other major British artists such as Kenneth Armitage, Henry Moore, William Staite Murray, William Turnbull, and Emily Young. The Hidden Legacy of Janet Leach Following the opening of Ceramic Works at Rejina Pyo 86, we invite you to read an essay on Janet Leach by Dr Helen Metcalfe on the Rejina Pyo Journal. Often positioned in the shadow of Bernard Leach and the legacy of the Leach Pottery, Janet Leach’s contribution to modern ceramics remains both distinct and underexamined. Shaped by her time studying in Japan under Shoji Hamada, her work moves between cultures and disciplines, balancing spontaneity with control, function with sculpture. Read the full essay via the link in our stories.

Opening today, Ceramic Works by Janet Leach Presented in collaboration with Willoughby Gerrish. A quietly pioneering voice in 20th-century studio pottery, Janet Leach developed a practice shaped between the United States, Japan, and the UK. Her work balances instinct and discipline through forms that feel grounded yet alive with movement. Thrown stoneware sits alongside sculptural, hand-built vessels. Layered glazes and textured surfaces carry the mark of the hand. In person, their depth, tonal shifts and weight of each piece fully reveal themselves. On view 26 February – 26 April 2026 Rejina Pyo 86 86 Golborne Road, London All works available to purchase.
