A green sea turtle on the Chien Tong shipwreck, St. Eustatius, this Taiwanese fishing vessel limped into Statia’s harbor one night, damaged beyond repair and eventually abandoned. In 2003 she was intentionally sunk as an artificial reef at 22 meters and the ocean has been claiming her ever since.
Statia does not get the attention it deserves. The diving is world class, the wrecks are accessible, and you will almost certainly have super clear water to yourself.
On my way to Bermuda right now and stoked to see how the wrecks there compare. Two very different islands, two very different underwater histories. Which one wins? Check back next week and I’ll let you know. 🤿
Forever our happy place: 🌊🤿
Nothing clears the mind like a dive.
Can you relate… or is it just us? 👀

A few things I wish someone had told me about underwater photography when I started.
The single biggest mistake in underwater photography is shooting from too far away.
Water kills contrast, color, and detail with every meter between you and your subject. A shark photographed from 5 meters away looks soft and washed out. The same shark from 1.5 meters away pops.
Get closer than feels comfortable. Then get closer again.
That is one of dozens of things I cover in the full field guide I just published. I discuss gear at every budget, the five settings that matter most, how to deal with light at depth, backscatter, subject behavior, editing, and the ten mistakes I see constantly.
If you are starting out or intermediate, it’s worth a look.

The ocean is not dying. But it is in distress. Here is what the science says, both the parts that are hard to read and the parts that give you reason to keep going. 💙
Which rays have you seen in the wild? 🌊
Stingrays. Manta rays. Mobulas. Spotted eagle rays. One ancient lineage.
Rays have been gliding through the ocean or hiding in the sand for over 150 million years. They were here before the continents finished moving. Yet have changed almost nothing about themselves since.
Watching a manta bank and turn overhead, or a spotted eagle ray pulse through open water, or a stingray lift off the sand never gets old.

This sea turtle was photographed in the Gili Islands, Indonesia.
Thanks @manta_raes for making this happen 🙌
Day in the life of a mama sea cow and her baby. Manatees nurse their young from nipples hidden under their flippers. They spend most of their days feeding on sea grass and lounging in shallow waters of the Florida coastline and springs. 🐮
