I’m inspired by the fluidity of evolution. Every life form is shaped in relation to its environment. This is not only true for the external anatomies of organisms but also for mental dispositions. In many situations the physical shapes the mental and visa verser. This can be seen in the symbioses of flowers and their pollinators. The bee's brain evolved in coordination with the physical form of the flower. Through our survival over the eons we have also been subject to this type of mental shaping. There are reasons why a slug looks gross and an apple looks appealing and this visual language feeds into the environment we create for our selves. The bright packaging of a skittles packet is a perversion of the fruit it emulates. We are surrounded by man made objects echoing these psychological commonalities. Lately flowers have been a big part of my work. The beauty we feel for them is undeniable and yet they serve no obvious function. I speculate that like the pollinators we have also benefited from the way flowers advertise them selves. The flower signifying to our ape ancestors that this tree holds promise, a symbol of fruit to come. Hope locked into a hypnotic arrangement of petals and fragrance. By mechanically animating the flowers form I take the structure and symmetry and roll them into this kaleidoscopic vortex. The goal is to accentuate this attraction and the optimism it is infused with.

If there is to be a lasting light on this planet it will possess the power of harmony. Flowers are an example of an ecological revolution that embodies this cohesion, creating a more efficient flow of solar energy into the food web leading to the flourishing natural ecosystem we see in nature today. The rise of angiosperms (flowering plants) and the fruit and seeds they produce only started developing in the Cretaceous, the majority of life on land existed without them. For perspective pine nuts and possibly ferns are the only non angiosperms plant in your diet today.
The flowers I have created stand as totems of a future balance: the mechanical, biological, anthropic and algorithmic. We can see technology not as opposition to nature but as the next generation of it.
