May’s Artist of the month is Keely Cansler, a Raleigh-based visual artist known for work that blends expressive color, layered texture, and a strong sense of storytelling through contemporary form. 🎨 “My love for fashion began at a young age. Like many, it became my creative outlet and a form of self expression. My passion for the industry led me to the Anni Albers program at North Carolina State University where I acquired a BS in Textile Technology and a BAD in Art and Design. My program had a distinct focus in fabric design and as a result has largely impacted my process and overall aesthetic. During my studies locally and abroad at NCSU’s Prague institute, I was exposed to many techniques for manipulating fabric including hand dying, screen printing, digital print design and more. Utilizing these techniques to create my own fabric designs and incorporating them into my garments is something that is very important to me. During the spring of both 2010 and 2011 I was selected to showcase my work at the annual NCSU Art to Wear Fashion Show. Upon graduation, I moved to NYC to intern with Proenza Schouler for the summer. Then in the Spring of 2012 I was chosen as an Emerging Designer for Charelston Fashion Week and I recently just participated as a local designer for FashionSPARK and Couture for a Cause. - Cansler” Stop in for #firstfridayraleigh to see her work!
