Spring is here, and that means it’s nearly time for the Wild Seed Project’s newest guide to arrive! This year, we’re diving into the myriad ways you can create truly welcoming habitat in your own growing spaces: we can’t wait to share Making Habitat at Home: Native Plants for the Northeast with you. Learn how to participate in the patchwork of restoration that helps our flying, scurrying, hopping and crawling neighbors survive and thrive.
In celebration, come join us for a mix & mingle with our Wild Seed Project friends at Back Cove Books in Portland. There will be time to ask questions, share your gardening experiences, and get to know each other, the wonderful people of the Wild Seed Project and Back Cove Books communities. Bookworms, neighbors, WSP members, volunteers, longtime gardeners and novices alike — all are welcome! Light refreshments will be served.
Notes on access: Back Cove Books is located on the corner of Woodford St. & Forest Ave. Street parking is available on Woodford, Forest, and in the adjoining neighborhoods. There are two brick steps up into the building. Seating will be available for those who prefer to sit & mingle. Please let us know if there are ways we can support getting you to the event!

In this week’s Growing Greener podcast, host Tom Christopher speaks with Heather McCargo, the founder of the Wild Seed Project, based in Maine. She talks about why it's important to grow native plants from wild-collected seeds to preserve genetic diversity in the garden and beyond, and how she has embraced the evolution of her personal garden from meadow to biodiverse woodland.

WSP Sponsor Spotlight: Blue Ox Tree Service is located in Portland, Maine and serves the greater Portland area. Owner and principal arborist, Dan O'Wril, is also a licensed structural engineer and founded Blue Ox in 2016 when he pivoted back to a job where he could get out from behind a desk and move his body at work. Blue Ox is a full-service tree company providing tree removal and pruning services. With a background in structural engineering, Dan and the team specialize in pruning trees to reduce potential structural failures and in preserving mature trees by installing cable supports in their canopies. Over time, the Blue Ox Team has learned firsthand the damage that ecologically disruptive trees and vines cause to native species of trees. Blue Ox has become a sponsor of Wild Seed Project to support the continued education of their team and customers about the importance of preserving native trees in the Greater Portland Area. Join us for our last* winter seed sowing workshop of the year!
Come on over to Goodfire Tasting Room & Kitchen in Freeport for a hands-on, kid-friendly exploration of growing native plants from seed. We’ll get to know the plants that support our beloved monarchs (hint: it’s more than just milkweed!). And we’ll sow seeds! All participants will leave with a pot of seeds for home.
This workshop is great for kids and adults alike. The first hour will be hands-on activities and seed sowing; the second hour is for those who would like to stick around for further discussion of native plants and how to care for them.
And of course, all are welcome to stay after for tasty food and drink at Goodfire!
Link to register in bio.
*We may also add one workshop in March for seeds that don’t need winter cold - stay tuned!
