‘I really feel at home with clay. I stick to hand building so that I’m fully present and immersed in the process. I gain a deeper understanding of it that way. The good thing about clay is the liberty that you have – you can make mistakes, it creates room for you, it’s so soft. If it gets hard you can break it down and make the same form again, or something new. This versatility and malleability has taught me to apply these qualities to other aspects of my life. Clay allows you to create something unique every time you work with it.’ - Olubunmi Atere (@oluoninsta ) Photographer & Writer/Interviewer: @blueeyeobservatory Publication: @roadbook

Shekudo (@shekudo ) is an exciting example of what happens when we pay attention to the beauty that moves through our city and our people. Passionate about community-centered design, I thoroughly enjoyed coming up with this film’s concept and speaking with Akudo for my roadbook article, written in 2023, on the various ways craft continues to live in Lagos’s contemporary design scene. Witnessing Akudo’s agility – how she worked with the obstacles she faced in Lagos and, through consistency and commitment, developed with her community of artisans – was truly inspiring.
