Open knowledge depends on partnerships and we're very proud of the one behind this update. Wikimedia UK and @Wikimediase have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (@FAO ) to expand access to reliable information on food, agriculture and related topics through Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. The five-year agreement builds on years of collaboration and makes FAO one of the first UN agencies to formalise this kind of partnership with the Wikimedia movement.

Wiki Loves Earth 2026 starts today! The world's largest nature photography competition is open from 1 May to 31 July and every image uploaded becomes part of a freely licensed record of the planet's natural heritage on Wikimedia Commons. It could be anything: a coastline, a hedgerow, the walk you take every morning. Your photos could illustrate Wikipedia articles read by millions and support education and conservation worldwide.

Today is World Book and Copyright Day: a UN-led celebration of books, authors, and the right to access knowledge freely. For us, it's also a moment to reflect on the partnerships that make open knowledge possible. Since 2020, we've been working with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) alongside @wikimediase , helping release content under open licence so that reliable information about agriculture and food security can reach a global audience through Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. We're excited that this work is now being formalised through an MOU; setting the stage for deeper collaboration and taking our shared ambition to the next level.

It's Earth Day, and the 100 Days 100 Edits for Climate campaign is back for round two. Climate researchers and professionals are teaming up to improve Wikipedia's climate content: one edit a day, for 100 days. Wikipedia is read billions of times a month, which makes it one of the most important places to get climate information right. Whether you're a researcher, PhD student or climate professional, you only need to propose a single edit to take part and you don't even need to edit Wikipedia yourself. Get involved, the link is in the stories!

#EarthDay is a reminder that access to knowledge isn’t neutral: it’s necessary. As the climate crisis accelerates, the need for reliable, up-to-date and unbiased information has never been more urgent.
