What connects tilapia farming and guava growing? 💧
For Olga Vargas, a farmer in Buenos Aires, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, the answer is water.
As rising temperatures, irregular rainfall and extreme climate events make farming more difficult, Olga is using irrigation and water storage to better manage the dry season and keep producing.
With support from a joint @FAO and @UNICEF project, a reservoir and irrigation system now help bring water to her guava trees, reduce losses and strengthen her farm’s resilience. 🌱
The project, financed by the Joint SDG Fund, was implemented with Costa Rica’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Health and the local governments of Buenos Aires and Guatuso.

🌿 Plants are at the root of the right to food.
Healthy plants help make food available, support adequate diets, protect livelihoods and strengthen communities’ resilience to pests, diseases and climate shocks.
They also depend on clean, healthy and sustainable environments, because the right to adequate food and the right to a healthy environment are deeply connected.

More than a game. More than a team. 💙
As the @italrugby women’s team continues its @womenssixnations journey, their voices remind us that sport can empower, inspire and create opportunities for future generations.
They encourage young girls to believe in their potential, both on and off the field. Values that also guide @FAO ’s commitment to building a more equal and sustainable future for all. 🌍
Because when girls are empowered, entire communities grow stronger. 💪
Più di uno sport. Più di una squadra. 💙
--------
The war in Gaza destroyed nearly every pillar of local food production and agricultural systems.
The full entry of key commercial imports and unhindered access to agricultural land are essential to recovery and sustainable food security.
That’s why @fao and @worldfoodprogramme are working hand in hand to empower farmers to prepare land and provide them with the cash and other inputs they need to restart production.
The people of Gaza cannot afford to miss another agricultural season.
People see rangelands and think “empty.”
But for many of us, rangelands are home, culture, food systems, biodiversity, medicine, livestock, livelihoods, and identity.
This International Year of Rangelands, let’s challenge some of the biggest myths:
Myth: Rangelands are barren and useless land.
Fact: Rangelands support millions of people, wildlife, pollinators, and livestock while sustaining entire local economies.
Myth: Nothing grows in rangelands.
Fact: Rangelands are rich ecosystems with grasses, shrubs, medicinal plants, trees, and biodiversity adapted to harsh climates.
Myth: Pastoral communities destroy the environment.
Fact: Indigenous and pastoral communities have protected and managed rangelands for generations through traditional knowledge and mobility.
Rangelands are not wastelands.
They are living landscapes.
And protecting them means protecting people, culture, biodiversity, and the future.

Sometimes, innovation comes with a wagging tail 🐶💡
In southern Italy, dogs trained by @encimilano are sniffing out Xylella fastidiosa, a deadly bacterium threatening olive trees 🌳
Would you trust a dog to protect your plants and crops?

🌿 It’s #PlantHealthDay!
Stronger plant biosecurity means safer food, healthier ecosystems, protected livelihoods and safer trade.
In this special video message, Enrico Perotti, Secretary of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), and Yurdi Yasmi, Director of @FAO ’s Plant Production and Protection Division, explain why preventing the spread of plant pests and diseases matters for all of us.
Plant health is everyone’s responsibility — and biosecurity is our first line of defense.

New Episode of The Work We Do is out!
In the latest episode, Charles Spillane, Chief Scientist of @fao , traces his journey from a farm in Ireland to one of the world's most influential roles in agrifood science - and the lifelong love of science fiction that helped shape his techno-optimistic worldview along the way.
He unpacks why scientific advances often don't reach farmers who need them most and what it takes to close the gap between knowledge and adoption.
He also weighs in on who owns agricultural data and how research funding models could be improved, and shares his vision for the future of agrifood science.
