Oldham, commissioned by Hearing in Color for Chroma. Written when Chroma was still a seedling of an idea, “As We Are” sets words drawn from Reverend Marianne Budde’s January 2025 address in Washington, D.C., offering a powerful reflection on humanity, compassion, and unity. The piece is a call to see one another fully—as humans deserving of dignity, mercy, understanding, and love—especially in moments of fear, division, and uncertainty. Through this commission, Chroma affirms its commitment to new works that respond directly to our time, using choral music as a space for reflection, healing, and collective hope. One of my favorite moments from this past year was convincing a bunch of crazy talented people to come together all in one room to perform some songs of mine. I’ll forever be thankful. During rehearsals before this show, LaRob, Tiana, and I got together after we wrapped up to play and talk through some of the music. We started messing around and Tiana started singing the violin I line during the breakdown (in the same octave!!) and we started screaming about how incredible it sounded so we ended up leaving it in. This week I’m thankful. Thankful for music and creating opportunities for myself and my friends. I’ve been feeling a million ways lately, but music still keeps me grounded. And I’m thankful for finding the strength to do something scary like share things like this. All I want to do is write and arrange songs and new pieces and do cool shit with my friends. Next year, my focus is on doing just that. It might take me a while, but I want to put more of my music and songs into the world featuring the people that keep doing the damn thing all around me.
