Back on site this week for a follow-up visit to an installation we completed for Bloomberg TV a couple of months ago. Working in collaboration with @whitelightltd and @scottfleary , @westendrigging Technical Director Howard Dandy developed the design and structural engineering solution for the upgrade of an existing studio grid, enabling it to safely accommodate the additional loads required for Bloomberg’s new studio podcast setup. While much of our work is rooted in performance spaces, cultural venues and theatres, projects like this highlight the crossover between entertainment rigging and the fast-paced demands of TV and broadcast environments. Rigging is an industry that asks a lot of people physically and mentally at times, particularly during long installs, tight turnarounds and challenging projects. #Flashback to last Sunday when we once again supported @rossvideo with the rigging infrastructure for spidercam at #OldTrafford. This isn’t the easiest venue to install the rigging needed for the aerial cameras, designed and built long before aerial footage was a thing. We’re proud to have a team of riggers at WER that are used to working in stadiums like this and others up and down the country every week, thanks to the work we do for the @premierleague . Their knowledge of all the complexities and challenges that these venues can present, mean that they approach each job well informed and confident to tackle even the trickiest installation.

Visitors to London’s @southbankcentre this Bank Holiday weekend were greeted by Pin Drop, a striking 20m-tall installation suspended high above the riverside, marking the venue’s 75th anniversary. Designed by Gareth Pugh and Carson McColl and manufactured by @glowinflatables , the artwork hovered above one of the capital’s busiest public spaces. But behind that moment of visual impact lies a complex feat of engineering, planning and safety management - much of it unseen, but without which, Pin Drop would have not got off the ground. @westendrigging , was proud to be the specialist team responsible for safely suspending the structure above thousands of daily visitors. Install a 6m-tall kinetic structure which brings together live action, CGI, motion capture and generative machine learning within the confines of the historic arches of @somersethouse That was the challenge #westendrigging Technical Director Howard Dandy had to solve earlier this year. The work, commissioned as part of @studiowaynemcgregor #infinitebodies exhibition, explores the body as something expanded, hybrid and constantly evolving across physical and digital forms. Howard engineered a fully non-invasive solution to support this complex moving system, protecting the Grade II listed architecture while enabling the piece to come alive. The #StampStaircase at @somersethouse is a self-supporting cantilevered staircase, designed to appear as though it’s floating. So when we were tasked with installing @margoselbystudio Moonlanding - a 16m suspended textile installation - positioned through the full height of the stairwell so visitors could move around it as they went up and down, it meant one thing…we couldn’t touch it! We couldn’t drill, fix or have any structural impact on the grade 2 listed stairs. Instead, @westendrigging technical director Howard Dandy, engineered a totally independent system, carefully balanced and integrated into the space, allowing the artwork to hang exactly where it needed to be but without relying on the structure around it. While the result looked effortless, there was a lot of very deliberate engineering behind it. Very often the challenge isn’t just what you’re hanging, it’s where you’re hanging it. Difficult doesn’t mean impossible - with the right experience there is almost always a way. Have you ever been told something can’t be done because it’s ’too difficult’? It was annual inspection time at Townhouse, @kingstonuniversity this week. We’ve been on-site carrying out works across their media studios and theatre spaces.
