Our pilot season draws connections from Palestine to the Philippines, illuminating the deep threads that tie our struggles, our histories, and our liberation together — across oceans, generations, and borders. This podcast has been years in the making. After October 7, 2023, like so many, our lives shifted — our purpose sharpened. It feels deeply significant to launch this project today: a day that reminds us that Palestinians continue to fight for freedom, dignity, and life in the face of an ongoing genocide. A time that has reawakened our imaginations. Today, on Nakba Day, we’re honored to share a special episode of Rising for Our Motherlands. 🇵🇸 Nakba Day marks the ongoing catastrophe of Palestinian displacement and dispossession that began in 1948, when more than 750,000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes and over 500 villages, towns, and cities were destroyed. In this episode, Maisa and We Rise Apprentice Hannah speak with Saif Abu Keshek from the @GlobalSumudFlotilla , recorded at the 🎙️ International People’s Tribunal on Palestine in Barcelona. Together, they discuss resistance, collective responsibility, and what keeps us rooted in the struggle for Palestinian liberation. We also honor the central role of Palestinian political prisoners in the liberation movement. Political prisoners are not only symbols of resistance — they are our compass, guiding the movement through steadfastness, sacrifice, and collective struggle. Earlier this year, Saif and Brazilian activist ThiagoÁvilaBrasil were abducted while participating in a humanitarian flotilla mission to Gaza. 🌊 Rising For Our Motherlands Episode 6 Even In Our Dreams Part 1 dives into a powerful conversation about what it means to live in diaspora. 🌱 As people whose homelands are shaped by ongoing struggle and displacement, we reflect on how living away from our ancestral lands informs our identities, relationships, and sense of belonging. 🎙️✨ Lubna & Tina illuminate our histories of migration and displacement from Falasteen & the islands known as The Philippines. They share how these legacies of displacement continue to shape our communities in the diaspora today. 🌏🌍🌎 Lubna Morrar is poet, hairstylist and makeup artist. She is a Palestinian community organizer and activist from the Bay Area. Tina Shuaf-Bahar is a Filipino community organizing, singer and culture worker who has long been involved in migrant rights organizing, connecting struggles in her homeland to those faced by workers in the Bay Area. Together we explore how re-membering our languages, food and cultural practices are antidotes to resist pressures like assimilation and generational separation from our lands. 🤲🏽🤲🏿🤲🏾 We also reflect on how embodying dignity becomes a powerful act of resistance and resilience. this month I’m celebrating 7 years of leading movement, strength & dance at @RadicallyFitOakland - a community gym rooted in fat liberation & joyful movement for all queer, trans, Black and brown folks and their allies. I’m thankful for all the people I’ve met & sweat with. Happy 7 year anniversary at Radically Fit to the one and only, Nicky/Nickaroo! 🥳🤩💫 For those who don’t know, Nicky started as our resident dance instructor 🕺🏽& after a few years expanded their role into social media graphics & marketing. After a few years of that they expanded their role even more and are the operations manager for Radically Fit! 😎💛 Those are just titles, though. What Nicky has done with so much love, dedication & dignity is be an anchor for myself and for Radically Fit. When my Mom passed away in 2024 I knew I could step back to take time to grieve because Nicky was there to hold it down. Every event we’ve done in the past 4 years Nicky has co-organized with me, all the painting on our walls downstairs are by them, and all the things you may not see that help keep us going-Nicky has been a part of. 💪🏽🙌🏽 Nicky has helped me cultivate the community we have at Radically Fit and we are forever grateful for her!!! 🥲🥲 In addition to all she does daily at Radically Fit, she is a big community builder!!! She is the cofounder of @WeRiseProduction as well as a student & artist at @LiberationSpring ! In 1982, a 20-year-old man named Subu Vedam was accused of a murder he did not commit. Prosecutors had evidence that could have cleared him, and hid it. He spent the next 44 years in a Pennsylvania prison. He twice turned down the chance for freedom through plea bargains, because he knew he was innocent. Last August, a judge agreed: Subu's constitutional rights had been violated. His conviction was vacated. The DA dropped all remaining charges against Subu. The very next day, as he was preparing to walk out after 43 years, he was transferred to ICE custody. Subu is now 64 years old and has been held in an immigration detention center for six months. On Wednesday, April 1st at 1:30 pm ET, a judge will decide whether he is deported or freed. After 44 years, this is it. Want to show up for Subu?
