Peeling back some layers…
On the recent video for Forecast, I ran into a few challenging shots that required a workflow pivot. Having a fairly clear vision of what the shots needed to be, I went down my usual paths to work through the problem. Nothing was working, even after a couple days going through endless iterations. I’d been casually learning my way around @comfyui recently and figured this might be the time to see if I could utilize it to generate some production-ready assets. Controversy ensues!
The best way to learn new tools (IMO) is to have a clear ending point and try to figure out how to get there. A detailed vision forces to you to constantly ask why something works the way it does so you have the ability to fine tune the outputs. So I had the vision, but how do I get there?
Here’s a somewhat generalized description of my solution.
Starting off, I already had set up some scenes in Cinema 4D, so I was able to generate my own references to feed into the pipeline. This was key. No random prompting hoping an output would match the visuals that were already created. I’m creating the visual framework at the start.
This reference is then used to generate a grid of style frames which is a cool trick to bypass single image generation, which saves time (and money). Once I see something that I think matches the feel for how I see the motion in my head, that image / grid gets loaded into the next part of the pipeline where the desired frame is cropped out of the grid.
From there, that image is upscaled so we now are working with a hi-res reference, and then piped into the video generation model as our “starting frame”. This is definitely the most finicky part because the animations can go off the rails pretty easily, so it requires fine tuning of the prompt and learning what words are tripping up the model.
In the end I was able to produce four shots which were brought into the edit where they were graded and fine-tuned so they sat comfortably with the other renders.
Just another tool in the toolbox…
