Interview between @exovedate_ltd and good friend @forkingflow …..
“I met Rhayne in the summer of 2020 in Winnipeg, shortly after I moved to Canada for my PhD. She was DJ’ing, already with a visible spark, already operating beyond recognizable structures. There was a sense, even then, that she was not simply participating in a scene but quietly rearranging the conditions of it. Our friendship grew slowly, largely through what we did not exchange: not turning proximity into possession, not forcing disclosure into currency. I’ve come to understand her films in much the same way. They refuse extraction. They withhold resolution”

What would you do if the sun did not rise for a day? In 1982 in the Red River Valley of Manitoba, a crowd comes together for the unveiling of a statue, not knowing that a day of total darkness is upon them. Shot on 16mm film using broken Bolex cameras, Levers creates an intimate, dreamlike atmosphere with entrancing sounds, beautiful visuals, and an unsettling storyline that mixes fantasy and reality.
Free Admission | Friday, March 6th, 2026, 7:00 PM CST | Canada | 2025 | 95 min | STC | Directed by Rhayne Vermette
In English and French with English subtitles
“Elemental and enigmatic, Levers is a singular work by one of Canada’s visionary talents.”

We still don’t have a trailer for Levers but in celebration of today’s premiere @thenyff , we’re bringing this back. The trailer for “The Winnipeg Edge”, the unwanted companion film to Levers by Ed Ackerman which delves into something called “the Rhayne Vermette method”. Coming to a theatre near you, some where, some time.
Insights into the brain of Levers 🤯 A series of scans from a collage created by Divya Mehra through image exchanges with Rhayne for the 2024 Sobey Art Award catalogue.
Divya Mehra: Over the last decade, Rhayne Vermette has produced thoughtful and nuanced visual examinations of belonging, community, ways of seeing and land. Vermette’s films animations, photographs and two-dimensional collages make visible the vastness of the prairie landscape, the beauty of destruction and the complexities of Métis identity.
In anticipation of the publication of this catalogue, Vermette and I engaged in an image exchange on our phones. This conversation resulted in a record that generously offers insight into her work and the creative process. The following pages are drawn from various sources, including her archive and sketchbook, and they speak to Manitoba, invisibility, ancestry, intimacy, being seen, labour, humour and family.
