Newsflash: that saying about there being no such thing as bad press is absolutely true. If we had a dollar for every time a client passed on an opportunity, we would be rich, and it’s EXCRUCIATING every single time. If there’s a single rule we live and breathe by, it’s this: media begets media. There’s no major outlet in the country that will be interested in profiling a company with no past media coverage, so the best way to be featured in bigger outlets is to rack up a solid history of media opportunities. We won’t lie, there are, of course, some media opportunities that are undeniably better than others. Bigger audiences are obviously ideal, and speaking to your target market matters. But smaller audiences or niche publications are a great foundation to start building the kind of credibility that helps land bigger names. If you want our advice: do the small podcasts, take the local interviews, and answer the written questions. The media snowball is a real thing, so take advantage of every opportunity to make yourself well-known and respected in the public arena.

Wow, it's been a while. There have been a lot of changes here at HeadStart over the last few months. Being a small business certainly has its ups and downs, and lately it's felt like more downs have been on the docket than ups. We're slowly moving back in the right direction, and will cheerfully be pushing out PR tips and industry insights on a much more regular basis here - so stay tuned! All this is to say - if you're struggling to keep your business going, feel like the odds are stacked against you and that you aren't sure what the next month, much less the next quarter, looks like, you're not alone. But you can do this. Have faith in your team, in yourself, and in your customers. There's a light at the end of this tunnel and all the worry and hustle will be worth it.

Today marks the first day of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. And this year, more than any, feels like the time to drive awareness and conversation through the celebration. A recent UK study found that 75% of LGBTQIA+ founders hid their identity from investors. No need to deep dive into the implications. What we know to be true - a diverse community of founders, entrepreneurs, investors, and employees drives better business outcomes. Period. This world belongs to everyone in it, and each of us deserves a seat at the table as we are. According to the American Psychological Association -- (and likely anyone with internet access and/or a smartphone) -- media overload is hurting our mental health. BUT WE WORK IN MEDIA -- SO WHAT DO WE DO? We have to face the facts, to drive clickbait, headlines often prioritize negative and dramatic stories, and after a while, consumers are drowning in emotion over animal species on the verge of extinction, mass shootings, rising water levels, and employee burnout due to poor workplace culture. S.O.S! As PR pros, we want the clicks, the views, the shares, the comments. Engagement usually translates to dollar signs for clients, so we'll go to any length necessary to make that happen? Right? Wrong. We challenge ourselves as professionals to find the light in the story. To offer solutions to problems. To drive advocacy and action through tradgedy and fear. Let's call it the PR Code of Ethics. We support mission-driven founders who are paving new pathways in our world, determined to make a difference. AI continues to don it's Headline Prom King crown, and at this point we've seen it all - from "AI is the future! Get on board or get left behind!" to "Nearly all jobs will be automated by the end of 2030 and robots will rule the world!" Here's what we know - it's hard to predict what the future will look like. Dr. Emmett Brown and Marty McFly accurately predicted video calling would be part of life in 2015, but missed the boat on auto-lacing sneakers. James Cameron's The Terminator teased military drones and AI technology in 1984. And Dick Tracey blew our minds when he donned the first smart watch in 1990. While we're still tying our shoes manually, we're also committed to responsible AI-use. Acknowledging it is here, and likely here to stay, we're actively exploring creative ways to use it to our benefit -- NOT as the answer, solution, or mega brain, but instead as a tool to drive productivity, creativity, and efficiency. Human innovation is still our true differentiator.
