🌊 “I don’t feel as trapped now.”
#SurfTherapy gave Cerys a place where she could feel safe, supported and like she belongs. When she first joined @waveprojectnorthdevon , she felt unsure and apprehensive. But over time, we watched her confidence grow in the water, and beyond. She progressed through Surf Therapy, then Surf Club… and now she’s one of our brilliant volunteer Surf Mentors!

🌊 Surf Therapy has the power to transform relationships.
For Florence and her mum, Hazel, surfing with The Wave Project has become a source of pure joy - a moment of positivity in a life filled with hospital appointments and challenging procedures.
Surfing has not only brought them closer but also provided a much-needed emotional boost. It’s more than just catching waves; it’s about creating beautiful, lasting memories together. Each of our session is tailored to meet the unique needs of every surfer, ensuring that the experience is as authentic and barrier-free as possible.

🌊 This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek , we’re reflecting on some of the things we’ve learnt through Surf Therapy and time spent in blue spaces.
During our delivery season, we see how movement, connection, nature and community can help young people feel calmer, more confident and more like themselves. Mental health support doesn’t always look the same and sometimes starts with laughter, feeling like you belong or simply getting into the water.
What’s something that helps you feel grounded, calm or connected?

🌊 Anxious and unsure, Aaron struggled to get out of the car. But stepping into the water changed everything. 🌊
From Surf Therapy participant to volunteer Surf Mentor, Aaron knows just how transformative Surf Therapy can be. Arriving at the beach, Aaron was anxious and withdrawn. But from that first session, he felt welcomed and supported. His instructor helped him build trust in a way that felt safe and not forced. Every Tuesday, Aaron came back. And with each session, something shifted.
Over six weeks, he experienced what so many young people do:
🏄♀️Growing confidence
🏄New friendships
🏄♀️A sense of identity and purpose
Today, Aaron has come full circle by returning as a volunteer Surf Mentor, supporting young people who are just starting out their Surf Therapy journey.

✨'When Lauren had the chance to process her feelings, I had time to process mine.' ~ Lauren's mum
When Lauren was dealing with the grief of her grandma passing, just 6 months later her grandad, too, passed away. Surf Therapy helped bring back her confidence and happiness. ‘[It made her] a lot calmer, a lot more able to process what’s happened. And happier.' says mum Tracey. Lauren continues: 'It’s a really nice, safe space for anyone that needs a bit of help.’
The positive effects of our Surf Therapy programmes have the power to ripple out far beyond the initial waves of impact we see in our young people. Providing Lauren with a safe and supportive environment in turn gave her family space to process grief themselves. 'When Lauren had the chance to process her feelings, I had time to process mine.’
Following her Surf Therapy programme, Lauren progressed to Surf Club sessions at her local Project Hub in North Devon, and she now aspires to be a Surf Mentor herself, keen to help others in the same way The Wave Project helped her.

We’re sorry.
We’re sorry that so many young people are still facing barriers to mental health support.
We’re sorry that confidence, connection and joy can feel out of reach for those who need it most.
We’re sorry that blue spaces, and the calm and connection they can bring, aren’t accessible to every young person.
But we’re not sorry for believing it can be different.
Through Surf Therapy, young people find confidence, connection and a sense of belonging, both in and out of the water. This is why we’re asking you to help us Power Beyond The Surf 👉 link in bio!
