Vicky, an aspiring dancer from Madrid, is working as an au pair for a New York City family. When rumors surface about a violent unhoused man roaming Prospect Park, she must confront these escalating threats while searching for the missing family dog.
Imagine a Béla Tarr film about a canicide. This microbudget debut feature includes a dog murderer, an anxious au pair, and a loaded gun. Based on true events in Prospect Park, using real people playing themselves, and long uninterrupted takes. One night only!
Goodnight, Moon is a raw exploration of grief, memory, and the struggle to let go. Written and directed by Michael Patten (@waterboxes ) with co-writer Jacob Kaplan (@waterliar ), this deeply personal film was shaped by their real-life experiences with loss. Featuring a powerful, honest performance by Kris Avedisian (@kris.avedisian ) alongside Delphi Harrington (@delphiharrington ), the film blurs the line between life and death, weaving dark humor into a tender portrait of mourning.
Shot on 16mm by cinematographer Sharif El Neklawy (@sweetsharif ), Goodnight, Moon carries a moody elegance that elevates its emotional weight. In our exclusive interview, Patten reflects on the film’s long evolution, the unexpected resonance of personal loss, and how a story about trespassing and séances became a deeply cathartic journey.

Jacob Kaplan and I wrote this film eight years ago — about a man trespassing onto his childhood home, chasing closure after stealing his father’s ashes. At the time, we had no idea how close to home it would eventually hit for me.
After years of drafts — and a pandemic delay — we finally shot it in 2022. By then, both Kris Avedisian (our lead actor) and I had lost our fathers. Then, during production, we lost an actor unexpectedly and reshaped the ending. On our final shoot day, I got more news of a loss close to me.
It still stuns me that we wrote a story about grief before I had truly lived it. Making this film became a way of processing something I didn’t yet know was coming.
This one’s for my pops.
